  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a serious assault on Dyckman St. and Broadway in Manhattan, a dog attack on Lamont Ave. in Queens, and a sexual assault at Queens General Hospital in Queens.
  • Just a few days more than than 65 years ago today, a munitions ship that had caught fire was scuttled in New York Harbor. If not for the brave actions of the Coast Guard at the time, large areas of of lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and NJ would have been destroyed in a massive explosion.
  • Just in time to take advantage of California's new law allowing gay marriage, Lindsay Lohan is rumored to be engaged to Samantha Ronson.
  • Is Columbia College misleading prospective undergrads by portraying the nearest subway stop at 116th St. as a marbled affair that includes service that was discontinued some time ago? The reality is a little less glitzy.
  • The description of how a Washington Heights man allegedly beat his roommate's dog to death while the owner was away reduced many grand jury members to tears.
  • A man who fell onto the tracks at the Delancey St. station in Manhattan this afternoon avoided being killed by lying in the depression between the rails as the F train passed over him.
  • Childhood obesity rates have finally stalled, probably because kids these days are too lazy to stuff their faces anymore.
  • Former NJ Governor Jim McGreevey says that he's always been indifferent to money and is too poor to pay alimony while living in his boyfriend's mansion.

Right, because the 9 was sooo different from the 1.

Poor McGreevy: All broke in that little 'ol mansion, bottoming from the top.

Actually - the BWOG post is kinda sad considering that the "fake" stairway to the 116th station is not only the real one, which an Ivy League student couldn't recognize despite the fact that he lives next to it, but that he can't even tell marble from concrete.

BellG: Actually he said it was marble, but it's granite.

I'm undecided.

Why would you post a photo like that when your first news item includes a report of a sexual assault?

[6] Because I think that women's sexuality and violence against women are two completely different things. To intimate one with the other is an attempt to criminalize women's ownership of their own sexuality and is a form of blaming the victim when violence is perpetrated against her.
