EVENT: This weekend marked the opening of Water Taxi Beach, and if today's weather is beckoning you to some sandy shores, we suggest heading over there. Their beach blanket bash includes DJs Soul2Soul and Steven Retas, Nef Nunez, Brian Coxx and Brian Burnside -- all on hand to soundtrack your tan.
12 p.m. // Water Taxi Beach [2 Borden Ave, Long Island City] // Free
EXHIBIT: Over the weekend Woody Guthrie’s Coney Island Years opened at the Coney Island History Project; the exhibition features photographs from the Guthrie Archives, song lyrics, and more. From the press release: "Singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie and his family became a vital part of the Coney Island community when they lived on Mermaid Avenue from 1943 through 1952. One of his tunes pays tribute to 'Mermaid Avenue that's the street/Where the lox and bagels meet/Where the halvah meets the pickle/Where the sour meets the sweet.' Guthrie composed over 300 songs during his Coney Island years and also created sculpture, paintings and poetry." Guthrie’s ashes were even scattered on the Coney Island beach when he died in 1967!
1 to 6 p.m. (through Sept 1st) // Coney Island History Project’s Exhibition Center [1000 Surf Ave, Brooklyn] // Free
BBQ: FreeNYC notes another deejay-heavy BBQ today, this one in Brooklyn: "The Deep Dance crew come together for their annual Memorial Day Beats & BBQ. Soulful dance music all day and some free grub." They encourage you to "frolic to the funk," and don't forget about those drink specials.
3 p.m. to 10 p.m. // Art Land Bar [609 Grand St, Williamsburg] // Free
MUSIC: Kate Walsh, Quincy Coleman and Brandi Shearer take the Mercury Lounge stage tonight. The headliner (not to be confused with the ex-Grey's Anatomy star) is certainly worth checking out, so make this show a stop on your way from barbecue to bed. Tickets are still on sale.
7 p.m. // Mercury Lounge [217 E Houston St] // $10
