Fatal Brighton Beach Hit-and-Run

2008_05_brighthr.jpgA 40-year-old woman was fatally struck and dragged by a red Mercedes that hit her while she was crossing Brighton Beach Avenue yesterday afternoon. The car's driver, 27-year-old Ronald Suriano, was arrested for drug possession (cops found drugs in his car).

According to the Daily News, witnesses saw the woman's body fly up into the air. The car's windshield was, per WABC 7, "crushed in by the impact." One witness said, "Me and my wife decided to do some CPR, to try and keep her from passing....she was already choking from her own blood...so that was tough to look at."

Another said two men, possibly companions of the victim, attacked the driver, "The two guys took him out of the car and they beat the crap out of him." The men fled when police arrived.

Other charges are pending against Suriano, who refused to take a Breathalyzer.

Breathalyzer is as good as mandatory, though they try to play it off like they're respecting the individual's rights. You can refuse the test on the spot, but it just means they are within their rights to take you in and do much more intrusive tests.

I certainly don't condone vigilantism but I understand it. I'm waiting for the report about how many times he had been DUI and how many licenses he had suspended. As a matter of fact, I'm waiting to hear that he had no license.

Life in prison - no less.

Why is taking a breathalyzer not mandatory?

People should have the right to drag hit and run drivers out of their cars and kill them in the street over something like this. We need "free kill" laws now!
