15-Year-Old Killed on UWS; Turf War Suspected

2008_05_mmciver.jpgA 15-year-old Upper East Side resident was fatally shot after leaving a Sweet 16 party at the 133 West 90th Street in Manhattan. Maurice McIver had been shot in the groin around 1 a.m. yesterday, outside the Wise Towers housing project; a few hours later at the hospital, he "was pronounced dead from blood loss because the bullet had severed an artery in his leg."

The police think McIver had gotten into a fight with someone before the party. They don't think that person attended the party. A neighbor saw some teens waiting before shooting McIver and fleeing. Robert Dominguez said, "I ran over and he was saying, 'Help me, mister! Mister, can you help me?'"

According to the Daily News, one witness said some "Harlem's west side [teens] started the fight" with McIver and others"from East Harlem." A Wise Towers resident told the NY Times he heard "East Side" and "West Side" being yelled, "The East Side kids come over here, representing the East Side, then the kids from over here want to represent... Everybody comes here because we have the basketball courts. This is not the first time that they get into fights and into beefs.

McIver's friend called his mother, Janet Gaston, to tell her Maurice had been shot. Gaston said, "I would very much want someone to track down the individual who shot that gun. Someone there must know."

This is really sad, but I recall having a midnight curfew until I was out of my parents' home. This doesn't protect one from all knuckleheads, but it helps.

wtf gothamist? is nyc memorial day ONLY about shootings and stabbings in the hood?

Rfive--there are some other, less-grim stories coming up, but the sad fact is that there's still a lot of tragdy. Believe me, I'd love to write about happier things.

i wonder if those kids live in subsidize housing or rent stabilize or rent control.

Last time I checked, Rfive, memorial day was Monday.

now add some music, the sweet 16 girlfriend and a third act twist that includes eminent domain and you've got a sexy urban summer block buster.

as long as you pepper in some teenage drunk driving stories I'm happy.

east side of manhattan vs. west side of manhattan? That has got to be the lamest turf war ever.

This is gay and tragic. But gay.

I almost called the police on these kids when they were around 96th Street. Should have. :(

Congratulations on all involved for escalating stupidity to a higher level. Who knew the use of basketball courts was reason enough to want to kill people? There's a guy who takes "my" parking spot on occasion and I think he's from the east side of my building - should I shoot him?

"Hi, I'm a teenager and I'm dumb as dirt but I have a gun. I must be important...right?"

And this proves that everyone should be armed, just as gun advocates like to say. After all, if everyone involved in this fight had a gun, nothing would have happened. A bunch of immature kids with guns surely wouldn't degenerate into the OK Corral, right?

To Spiritof76:

I don't know what the answer is regarding ownership of guns. Is it outlawing it? Is it strict licensing? Is it more draconian laws when a gun is used during a crime?

I don't have the answer.

And this proves that everyone should be armed, just as gun advocates like to say. After all, if everyone involved in this fight had a gun, nothing would have happened. A bunch of immature kids with guns surely wouldn't degenerate into the OK Corral, right?

We (pro-2nd) don't advocate guns for minors, just as we (Libertarians) don't believe that drug legalization means drugs for kids. Each state and locality would come up with their own age restrictions.

I post this question to you, Spiritof76:

If you can get an illegal gun in NYC as a minor (a city with stringent laws on the book and a large patrolman net), what hope is there for the rest of the country in the war on illegal firearms?

Its the cops fault. They should have stopped these kids from rough housing sooner. They need more money for programs for these kids and the families. That will give them something to do since they have nothing to do but kill themselves. The cops that were in the area should be indicted for letting this happen. It is the cops fault. When are we going to put these cops in jail ???

Spiritof76: The only thing that would do in this case is kill the perp; the guy would still be dead.

What I would like to hear or read about is some Upper East Side Carrie Bradshaw wannabe getting into a fight with an Upper West Side Carrie Bradshaw wannabe. I can see the headline now: UPE and UPW Scary Sadshaws get into a Manolo Blahnick high-heeled shoes fight and throwing Magnolia cupcakes into each other.

im very nuch against 15 year olds owning guns i live in a very small communityt and i have allowed my daughter to shoot in case some one breaks in ,because it takes the cops 20 to 30 minuets to respond to a 911 call, i have 15 guns, she has shot every gun i have except my glock 45 and my 30-06 and my 12 guageshe has shot 2 22 rifles and a 22 pistol and 2 9mm and 1 9mm rifle and a 20 guage and 4-10 and a cross bow and a 380 she has also not shot my mini 14 5.56mm rifle and mini 30 7.62mm or my 40 caliber or compound bow,but i let her shoot them because she needs to be able to protect herself, but a lousvill slugger is my choice of weapon for her,but letting 15 tear olds in nyc own weapons is crazy because them or their friends could get hurt.i hve never lived in city im a country boy ,so i couldnt imagine what living in a place with gangs.i may feel different but i dont think so,there are no gangs where i live none at all.which im glad of but there are theives and burglers and a few killes but none gang afilleadtd.i know from watching history channel about gangs like m s 13 and many others,i feel bad for young kids growing up in the citys
