It was another Mets loss last night which means more questions about the fate of manager Willie Randolph. Lately, Randolph has been weathering fallout from comments he made earlier this week, suggesting SNY's camerawork of him was a little too negative.
Randolph wondered, to the Bergen Record's Ian O'Connor, why the media was okay with former Yankees manager Joe Torre's very laidback dugout demeanor, "Is it racial? Huh? It smells a little bit." Then he talked about being a black mananger/coach in professional sports.
Asked directly if he believes black managers are held to different standards than their white counterparts, Randolph said: "I don't know how to put my finger on it, but I think there's something there. Herman Edwards did pretty well here and he won a couple of playoff [games], and they were pretty hard on Herm. Isiah [Thomas] didn't do a great job, but they beat up Isiah pretty good. ... I don't know if people are used to a certain figurehead. There's something weird about it."Yesterday, Randolph claimed he thought the comments were off-the-record and apologized, "I shouldn't have said what I said. It was a mistake...I take full responsibility for what I said out of frustration, and hope that we can put closure to this matter and focus on winning some baseball games.""I think it's very important ... that I handle myself in a way that the [African-American managers] coming behind me will get the opportunities, too ... ."
The NY Times' Richard Sandomir took the "Willie Randolph Television Challenge" to see if Randolph was portrayed negatively on SNY. And Torre said he felt bad for Randolph, "It's a tough market. Willie is a good man, he's had success as a player and a manager. Unfortunately, with what happened last year, he's having to endure some things tough to endure."
Tonight, the Mets play the Braves in Atlanta--you can see it on SNY.

Off-the-record or not, Willie's comments were wrong. Isiah did a miserable job and was correctly slammed for it. Herm Edwards was a mediocre coach of a mediocre team and was rightly criticized for bad clock management.
I don't know what Willie is like behind the scenes, and so I can't judge him on that basis. What I do know is that he makes bad tactical decisions during games, and I don't like him as a manager because of that. It has nothing to do with race.
And by the way, it's naive to assume that any conversation with a reporter is off the record unless you explicitly say so. How about some common sense.
I don't think Willie's problems are racial.
He has one of the best teams in baseball, certainly one of the highest paid, and they're constantly tanking. Who is supposed to take the blame?
We can't really blame Minaya he brought in some great talent.
Randolph has to take the hit. He's the one who saw a team needing to win 3 out of 17 games to get into the post season last year and couldn't deliver. This year it's even worse. When you see Reyes not running out infield grounders, you know somethings wrong with the field managers. From what I have seen Reyes loves to play, it wasn't the big money that knocked the spirit out of him it's got to be management.
I now wear a National's cap
they remind me of the Mets more than the Mets do.
Well, I think the problem for Willie is the team's poor performance. Winning is a cure all, Willie.
I love Willie Randolph right where he is! Of course, I'm a Phillies fan and am eternally grateful for the tank job he and the Mets pulled last year.
As a fan of common sense - seriously, the fans of your division rivals like your management; that's got to tell you that there's a problem here.
Ah the fucking race card. I figured it would end up here. The ONLY reason Randolph is still the manager of the Mets after presiding over the 2nd WORST COLLAPSE IN SPORTS HISTORY is because he is black. Any white guy would have had his ass stuffed the day after the regular season ended. My sympathy for Mr. Randolph is now nil. Fire his ass -- he clearly can't get the job done no matter the color of his skin.
Why didn't the press question Joe Torre's laid back approach?
Maybe the 4 World Series championships with the Yankees has something to do with it.
Or maybe taking the Yankees to the post-season all 11 years he was managing, in his laid back way?
Or maybe because his team didn't choke and die like your team did last year, Mr Randolf?
This guy is a fucking IDIOT! If you are going to bring up race why did he mention Isiah Thomas? That dude actually survived 5 years in NY for BEING black. If Isiah was white he would have been run out after 1-2 years, but because he's the color of my dog's shit he was able to linger this long.
