Doctors for Senator Edward Kennedy tell the AP the 76-year-old has a malignant brain tumor. He had suffered a seizure on Saturday, and the tumor was discovered when the doctors performed tests and is believed to be the cause of the seizure.
His family rushed to his side at the Massachusetts General over the weekend, including niece Caroline Kennedy. The Senator and Caroline Kennedy notably threw their support behind Barack Obama's presidential nomination bid in January.
More recently, Senator Kennedy, who is the second-longest serving member of the Senate, has slammed Hillary Clinton, shooting down the idea of an Obama-Clinton ticket, "I think if we had real leadership - as we do with Barack Obama - in the number-two spot as well, it'd be enormously helpful."
According to the AP, survival depends on how aggressive the cancer is--it can be as long as five years or as short as one year. It's unclear what his course of treatment will be; full statement from the doctors, via Politico, after the jump:
Over the course of the last several days, we've done a series of tests on Senator Kennedy to determine the cause of his seizure. He has had no further seizures, remains in good overall condition, and is up and walking around the hospital. Some of the tests we had performed were inconclusive, particularly in light of the fact that the Senator had severe narrowing of the left carotid artery and underwent surgery just 6 months ago. However, preliminary results from a biopsy of the brain identified the cause of the seizure as a malignant glioma in the left parietal lobe. The usual course of treatment includes combinations of various forms of radiation and chemotherapy. Decisions regarding the best course of treatment for Senator Kennedy will be determined after further testing and analysis. Senator Kennedy will remain at Massachusetts General Hospital for the next couple of days according to routine protocol. He remains in good spirits and full of energy.

Say what you will about him, he was on the right side of almost every issue that affected us. I have no use for most of the Kennedys, especially his father, who was an American villain. The Chappaquiddick episode rightfully doomed him from seeking the Presidency, he should have been tried for murder, but we forgive and forget. I hope he recovers.
oh man. I don't get it with the Press fascination with The Bad luck of the Kennedy's. You know it's gonna sell papers. The press are licking their chops on how to tie it in with JFK's assassination, Junior's death and Jackie's fabulousness. I guarantee it's gonna be a whole bunch of shit in the papers in the coming weeks.

When he wasn't drinking heavily or generally just coasting on his former achievements. There was a very long time when Ted was just taking up space in the Senate. Every six years he would stop drinking, drop about 50 pounds, and "run" for reelection. Trailing Romney in the polls in September 1994 seemed to have woken him up.
Let's see him buy his way out of this one.

Last year, a nearly completely blocked left carotid artery (a main supplier of blood to the face and brain) was cleared in his neck. Did it mean that Ted had been partially brain-dead for years? His policy & judgement would indicate so.

Something in that water at Chappaquiddick entered his ear canal that night, migrating slowly over the years into his brain where it took root and began to slowly grow. Now it has metastasized fully and has taken control of Ted's life. From her perch, Mary Jo is laughing.
He has been one of the consistently reasonable voices in politics for the last 25 years. He's a senator who actually looked after the interests of his state, what a novel idea. I miss politicians who were so wealthy they actually cared a little bit about us plebes. Currently, the greed is just bottomless. Ted Kennedy is a screw up, but as a politician he has really tried to be halfway decent. Examine the alternatives among the current crop of politicians. I'd prefer a drunk New Englander speaking a shred of truth, even if it's motivated by guilt, than what we have.
