NYPD Gets 9.7% Retroactive Pay Hike

After concerns about low recruitment numbers due to low starting pay, the NYPD received a 9.7% salary hike from a state arbitration panel. Rookies, whose starting salaries was cut to $25,100, will now get $35,881.

Public Employment Relations Board voted to give all cops "compounded raises totaling 9.73 percent over the two years of an expired contract that ran from Aug. 1, 2004, to July 31, 2006." Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "While we wish the starting pay was higher, this is a step in the right direction."

The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association was fairly pleased, because the raises are higher than what other uniformed unions have received, but PBA president Patrick Lynch said they do "not go far enough toward making our pay competitive with other police departments." In fact, many veteran cops have complained the low pay has encouraged the department to accept "losers...thugs and gangbangers." And some cops are just dissatisfied with the raise--one told the Post, "It's insulting and it's not up to the cost of living. Why do you think so many cops are still living with their parents?"

Police officers in San Francisco make $72,956 their first year.

Good. They should get paid more.

I always thought it would be cool to be a detective. Then, I realized that the pay and bureaucracy stink. Good to seem them getting a raise.

They should get paid more anyways. Plus, this ruins my hot cop fantasy. I mean, what?

i know people who have made less then 25,000 the first yr. in their industry. 35,000 is not bad.

SF prob pays well because they have higher property tax plus they have a much smaller area to cover

now stop yer bitchin. you still make good money PLUS benefits. Lots of benefits.

People bitch about how low the salaries are for cops, but it's directly related to how many cops there are on the payroll. If there were fewer cops in the city, the pay for those cops would rise. As it is, you can usually see a group of about 10 cops standing around and maybe 1 is doing actual work. It reminds me of seeing road crews where most of the crew is sitting or standing around while one guy is flattening gravel with a shovel.

HowBoutDemCowboys - I thought the low pay for rookie cops was directly related to the high pay for senior cops in NYC. And cops standing around is a much nicer deterrent than cops harassing people.

Do you really want guys with guns only making $25K a year? I made more working at a copy shop in the City. And that was a low rung shop not a cushy gig like Pitney Bowes.

They only make 25k while in the Academy, again quite a decent salary for on the job training.
and again, add in the value of the benefits like how the private sector calculate a salary and it will add up.

its too bad good cops cant be compensated separately and higher than useless ones due to the way these municipal unions operate. we all just pay more for a lot of waste. also the low wages for rookies was the union's idea, not the city's - they wanted to funnel money to cops with seniority at the expense of the new hires.

btw, part of that motivation was to get fatter lifelong payouts at the taxpayers expense which looks at the last years of pay.

$35k to start is better than 25k but is still an insult considering the rough conditions and the risks they take policing this city. Like it or not, NYC needs a large police force but the recruits aren't there. Mandatory overtime is overburdening some units and are sucking away these officers' weekends and personal lives. the conditions just suck.

But we need cops. But if they keep leaving for other departments or city agencies (i've heard sanitation is actually a more attractive job in terms of compensation and having a personal life) we'll all be screwed.

I've seen quite a few of them standing around looking like bored tools and there are cops around the country who have abused their power. You really can't lump all police officers into monsters or stand around do-nothingers, if I may coin a word. Bad apples and dead weight are everywhere. We need to compensate NYC cops well if we expect to be safe.

I thought NYC is the safest big city in America?
Only if you're rich and a certain color.
you're more likely to get hit by a car.

Benefits certainly help, but you can't buy food or housing with health insurance.
