Senator Hillary Clinton won the Kentucky primary 2-to-1 over Senator Barack Obama, thanks to strong support from working class whites. According to Kentucky exit polls, seven in ten whites supported Clinton which, per the AP, included "about three quarters of those who have not completed college," resulting in her winning 65% to Obama's 30%.
Clinton said, "This continues to be a tough fight, and I have fought it the only way I know how — with determination, by never giving up and never giving in." She also emphasized counting every vote and how she leads the popular vote.
In spite of losing Kentucky, Obama gave a rousing speech in Des Moines, Iowa, alluding to his likely pledged delegate majority, "You have put us within reach of the Democratic nomination for president of the United States. We have returned to Iowa with a majority of delegates elected by the American people.”
He also praised his Democratic rival's Kentucky victory and perseverance, "Senator Clinton has shattered myths and broken barriers and changed the America in which my daughters and your daughters will come of age," but took aim at the probable Republican nominee:
We face an opponent, John McCain, who arrived in Washington nearly three decades ago as a Vietnam War hero, and earned an admirable reputation for straight talk and occasional independence from his party. But this year’s Republican primary was a contest to see which candidate could out-Bush the other, and that is the contest John McCain won.And Obama has won the Oregon primary.
Right now--not counting projected Oregon delegates-- Obama is within 100 delegates of the 2,026 needed, while Clinton needs 277 delegates to reach 2,026. Apparently his team has started working on putting together a general election team, though a spokesman says that would be premature since Obama hasn't clinched the nomination.
Still, pundits are wondering how Obama can quasi-claim victory when he got pummeled in Kentucky (and didn't spend any time there). NY Times op-ed columnist Charles Blow had an interesting piece about Democratic success in Appalachia over the weekend.

The Hellary PLOT!
Hellary said she was calling for the last time about the money I "owed" her for her campaign, so I decided to ask THE question that is on absolutely everybody's minds right now:
BALLMER: "Hillary, I will send you the ten million if you just answer one question for me:
How are you planning to shaft the Brother?
(I could hear her giggle a little, so I continued:)
With the remaining states, it is still numerically impossible for you to catch up! Yet you won't concede?
I know you and hubby well enough to know that something's up and it must be a lulu!
Bill says that you are going to do a: 'Don't disenfranchise the people of the great states of Florida and Michigan' speech! In other words: change the rules of the game because you are losing!
I can't quite agree with that theory though, you guys are sneakier than that! That whole obvious evil plot in my estimation is just a rouse to distract from your real game plan.
THEN it occurred to me, 'whatever happened to all of those FBI files you guys stole?'
Super-delegates! I get it now, that's how you know you have the super-delegates votes! Old fashoned BLACKMAIL!"
HELLARY: "But that would leave me looking like the bad gal Steve, but I must say you are partially there!"
BALLMER: "Ahhhh, you are letting your husband and flunkies plot the whole 'change the Florida/Michigan rules' thing!
hmmm ... at the last minute you will denounce the whole plot and claim to want a fair delagate count! Strictly by the rules!
YOU WILL LOOK LIKE A HERO! You will be the one who squashed the evil plot against the Black Man and then make him your water-toting VP!
HELLARY: "I didn't know you had it in you Steve!"
BALLMER: "Just one problem Hellary ..."
HELLARY: "My husband?"
BALLMER: "Yes! Won't he be ruined once you expose him and the conspirators?"
(She giggled again)
HELLARY: "I also plan on getting the 'divorcee'-vote Steve!"
BALLMER: "WOW! A four for one! You look like an honest hero, finally rid yourself of Bubba, you get the blackmailed nomination and Obama is proud to be your VP too! It's sheer evil genuis! - Check is in the mail Hillary!"
I find it weird that polls constantly harp on how Hilary's white supporters have bad educations. I wonder why they don't talk much of Obama's 91% Black vote's lack of education. Cause that's gonna be a bad number.
The problem is working class whites in Appalachia, everywhere else they have no problem voting for Obama.
Overall, I really wish there was an IQ test that you had to pass in order to qualify to vote. As well as a test that determines whether you even know what the issues are beyond "I like that guy." Pure democracy can only promise constant mediocrity, the way we have it set up. When 1/3 of the voters in West Virginia have minimal education, yet can help decide the future of our country, it's scary. And it helps explain why we're mired in Iraq.
c'mon, Obama got Oregon.
Rent the movie Blue Collar with Richard pryor and Harvey Kietel. the more things change...
babyhitler, I find it odd that Obama won in Oregon which is like
Also, there is *some* validity to your concern about the so-called black vote and relative lack of education. However, there is no assertion by the media that educated blacks (~20% of blacks vs. ~30% of whites vs ~50% of asians based on Census data) and uneducated blacks vote differently, which is a little offensive. Further, exit polls in WV and KY suggest that a large number of those supporting Clinton said that race was a factor in their decision-making process. This does not include the number of people who might say that religion or perceived religion is a factor (given the belief by some that Obama is a Muslim).
I'd be interested to see if there's a poll suggesting the blacks vote based on racial preference. If that's the case, then Al Sharpton's bid should have done much better than it did - and Obama would have had much greater black support than he did in the early stages of the race.
...Oregon is like
ugh "less than" 5 percent black - apparently, the less-than sign is perceived to be a command. Anyway, many of Oregon's residents lack advanced eductional attainment and few make above the national average in income...so, the whole assertion that Obama won't win blue collar whites is problematic, to say the least.
"while Clinton needs 177 delegates to reach 2,026"
It's 277.
She has 1,749 or 1,776 depending if you want to go with NYT or the AP. Neither total is 177 from 2026.
Obama should really get off his high horse. He needs a running mate with demonstrated support from the people he can't attract, and Clinton can be that person. Offer her the VP nod now and maybe she'll stop beating up on you.
#10 - Nah Brah. Obama needs another Black guy as VP. I'm telling you it will re-double his appeal.
In a vacuum, one might realistically consider HRC for the VP spot. However, there are a few real-life considerations:
1) I'm guessing that a good portion of the "base" of supporters would definitely be turned off by her selection, given all that's occurred;
2) His candidacy is based on the notion of doing things differently. Choosing HRC on the basis that she brings in the working-class white (really, Southern Democrat) and hispanic votes undermines that rationale;
3) A sufficient number of her supporters suggest that they will never vote for a black man for POTUS. Presumably, this also means that they won't vote for him even with her as a running mate;
4) Can you imagine how ineffective he'd actually be as POTUS with the Clintons running around in the White House? Talk about a back-stabbing crew.
Obama-Clinton sounds great in concept but I'm not sure it would work at this point in the game.
Obama-Edwards 08
Clinton is the last person Obama needs on this ticket as VP.
is this still going on? she hasn't dropped out yet?
so tingo, i guess you are happy that super-delegates can override the will of the people.
yea matty, Obama-Edwards (with a jetski).
All I would like to know is why hasn't there been anyone from the media ask Hillary or Bubba about Hillary's previous signed agreement that she nor any of the other candidates would not recognize the votes from Michigan or Florida. I would love to see Bill talk his way out of that question.
These two have turned this situation into such a joke. I love how a senator from New York, a state viewed a liberal bastion by those in the south/appalachia, has become the "voice" of "hard workin', blue collar worker." Give me a break, these two are so transparent it is sick.
JHM- I agree. It just goes to show how fake she really is. However, NYers had to of known all along this was her intention. I wonder if people in the state feel betrayed after it has become so apparent that she is willing to do anything/turn into anything in an attempt to grab the nomination.
who cares either way america is in trouble.
i hate her so annoying and deceptive maniuplative. She is a scorpio though. Showing all the unevolved traits.
McCain would like us to forget this: McCain lost some key states (Michigan, Massachusetts) and "won" with less than 40% in many others because Republican rules let the winner take all the delegates, even without a majority. If the rules party rules were reversed, Hillary would be gone and McCain would still be fighting Huckabee.
Well, there is only one more primary left right guys? then Hilary will concede.
Hillary wont concede until Michigan and Florida are resolved. She will rub shit in Howard Dean's face for being so partisan about her claims. This way she either forces a conjoined ticket or leaves the Democratic party begging for peace. It's her terms, or else. Her fat husband's handwriting is all over this.
