HIV Among High Schoolers Up Nearly 30%

hiv.jpgKids who weren't even born when AIDS was an epidemic that ravaged the American gay and IV drug-using communities are apparently oblivious to the potential toll it can take on its generation. New York City's Dept. of Health reported that the number of HIV infections among city high schoolers (between the ages of 13 and 19) rose 29% between 2004 and 2006. Current figures are not yet available, but Rep. Anthony Weiner is proposing a program to curb the spread of the virus.

Wiener's proposal includes increasing funding for needle exchange programs, health education, and linking HIV education with substance abuse programs. The availability of drug cocktails that have dramatically reduced the mortality rate of HIV-infected people in the first world has led to a sense of complacency about preventing infection, especially among younger people unfamiliar with the plague-like effect it had on communities in the late 20th century.

Persons with HIV who are taking anti-retroviral drugs are unlikely to transmit the virus. A young person who contracts the virus probably came into contact with a person with a high viral load. This person is not properly medicated. It takes two to spread the disease the young person and a person who is a host for the virus and is not being treated. Unhappily this is most frequent in the Black community. But high risk behavior by the young does not differ by race, it is the epidemiological environment that differs. This is a problem can be ameliorated if we face this truth and avoid blaming the young.

Oh, and God clearly doesn't want kids with muscular dystrophy cured either, does He? I guess it would put Jerry Lewis out of a job.

Sorry, your arguments are naïve and ignorant. Keep on hating. It obviously makes you feel good about yourselves.

Oh please...like straight people don't like giving and taking it up the ass. Where are you all from anyway, South Dakota? Ever watch a straight porn movie? Take a look, and then tell me straight women don't like to take cum in their ass.

If you stop stuffing a dick into your ass, you won't get AIDS.

It's as simple as that, fags. I'm proud to have never contributed one penny to AIDS research. If God wanted it cured - he would have cured it.

Wiener is proposing to curb AIDS in high school with a needle exchange program? How many high school kids are doing intraveneous drugs?!? Doesn't it make more sense to concentrate on the sexual aspects of transmitting the disease? Doesn't it make more sense that HS students are having sex rather than shooting up? What an idiot.

F...ing kids! When are they ever going to grow up?

    Never.

Come on, guys. You've been around long enough that you should already know babyhitler is one of the resident trolls here at Gothamist, along with Snoopy, Spear Chucker and Albert Sharpton.

Baby Hitler, although some on this blog feel he's a bit too obvious, is more correct about the problem of the spread of aids than the rest of the idiots that knock him. Unless of course this new spreading of HIV in high schools is done by needles.

Either way, it's no loss. If you are the dumb fuck enough to go out there and practice unsafe sex or share needles and contract HIV, you harvest what you sow.

The hubris that the fag generation showed back in the late eighties reaped their own reward.

Male-to-male contact is the leading behavior cited in new aids cases. But racially, it is the black community that leads, by far. Male-to-male contact within the black community is a big driver here, but too many people in the black community are "on the Down low" to deal with this.

  • Brainwash

Wow, babyhitler. You really are a baby Hitler. WTF.

this whole situation just proves that, while we think we've tackled the AIDS epidemic in the US, our educational programs just suck. people need to know that there are other options besides abstinence. and the prejudice and stigma of AIDS clearly hasn't gone away.

i mean, public education in America sucks in general, but that's besides the point...

  • matty

I am assuming you wrote that to get a rise out of people. That said if you actually believe what you wrote there then there's no point in even beginning to point out where you are wrong.

I thought NYC was a progressive, liberal city? I amazed that hicks like Bh actually live there.

it's usually gay dudes that have unprotected ass sex that get AIDS. AIDS activists usually tout that anyone can get AIDs and little babies get it and that's why we have to give billions in AIDS research but the stark reality is that 89% of all AIDS and HIV cases in AMERICA (Not Africa, mind you) are from queers that can't get enough ass sex and don't give a shit about condoms cause they can't control themselves and go in Raw. Then they cry "help me!" and enlist the help of all their fag hag friends to lobby for AIDS money and AIDS walks and Programs to ensure that the Government subsidizes a high price to keep them alive. An AIDS cocktail costs a AIDS patient around 80 bucks per pills a day. Think about that. AIDS could have been prevented if these guys just put on a condom or abstained but because of their weakness the american public has to subsidize their asses and keep them alive so they can spread the disease to others. Does not make sense.

Black kids. Sorry, but look at the statistics for the larger population as a whole.Blacks are just consistently in the highest risk category.

  • Snoopy

Any breakdown on the stats, like age, white, asian, black, latino, male, female, etc.? Considering that there are several hundred thousand students in the public school system in that age group, that isn't a large percentage at all.

  • Snoopy

F...ing kids! When are they ever going to grow up?

  • Dave Hogarty

That is absolutely true, but I think that given the high level of sexual activity among high schoolers and a general tendency towards recklessness among that age group, the DOH is worried that the 30% rise could turn exponential, which is something they're trying to avoid.

  • Brainwash

Oh, sorry, all my fault. I really have to stop leaving needles inside teddy bears on playgrounds...

  • Peter

One rule of statistics is that a relatively modest change in numerical terms can translate into a significant percentage change if the starting number is small enough. Here, there was an increase of 38 cases of HIV among high schoolers in the time frame under consideration. That's hardly an overwhelming number given the size of the city's high school population, but because there were only 130 cases at the beginning of the period the 38 new cases represents a significant percentage increase.
