Zipcar Courts Shepard Fairey

0805faireyzipcar.jpgIt seems Zipcar has its engines revved up for Shepard Fairey; their latest newsletter included a personal note to the street artist.

Seems the company is smitten with his piece that resides on a wall in their new Hope Street and Marcy Avenue lot in Brooklyn (pictured), and hint at wanting to partner up. They write:

Check out this latest from famed graffiti artist Shepard Fairey. Rumor has it, he's also a Zipcar member. This amazing wall art can be seen at one of our newest lots at Hope St & Marcy Ave in Brooklyn.

While we're on the subject, a side note for Mr. Fairey himself: Shepard, we have a proposition for you. If you are interested in hearing it, email Ryan. Oh, the intrigue!

Will all of Zipcar's lots soon be adorned with Fairey's work?

Is someone at Gothamist sleeping with this guy?

Yeah. They're going to give him a free boat. He can pick it up at Precinct 92.

lol. did his mom write this?

Zipcar's a cool idea, but how can they make money these days when they pay for the gas? Some of their rates are around $10/hour and I can burn $10 of gas in one hour of highway driving with prices these days.

Seems weird that they would contact him this way. Wasn't Zipcar involved with his show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in DUMBO last year? I remember seeing their logo on the invite.

great comment about the free boat. that's for all the other "taggers" and "street" "artists" too stinking up new york downtown.

@Park22: I don't think so...I was there and I Dewar's was a sponsor, but I can't remember Zipcar having any type of presence at the actual show. Maybe they just have a garbage PR department.

Anyone bashing Shep Fairey doesn't remember when there were Andre's every 2 feet in New York, and half the country as well. Stickering has sort of run it's course, but pre-interwebs, and pre graffiti being a thing for white kids from the suburbs, it was very cool. For the longest time we all saw Andre's and nobody really knew what it was, but it was funny, and it was UP. I still think his work his cool, and just because he makes a nice living is no reason to question his credibility. Damien Hirst makes millions selling crap you can buy at the Museum of Natural History gift shoppe, but Shephard Fairey is a jerk? C'mon now.

Damien Hirst is an Ur-jerk. the comparison is apt.
