Today's Action: A Double Downer

2006_04_smetslogo.jpg

  • Washington 1 Mets 0: Where was Jose Reyes going? Down 1-0 in the 8th, Reyes led off the inning with a single. The Mets played for the tie by sacrificing him over to second and it worked, but for some reason Reyes tried to get to third. With his speed and the middle of the order coming up, it was a stupid risk and Reyes was thrown out.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the only baserunning gaffe for the Mets. Carlos Beltran got doubled off of third on a line drive to end the game. Some people will make excuses for Beltran, but he wasn’t running on contact and should have been closer to third with only one out.

To make matters worse, Billy Wagner had some choice words with the press after the game about the lack of accountability from Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran. Wagner vowed that the situation would be “resolved tomorrow” so stay tuned.

  • Tampa 5 Yankees 2: It would be safe to say that neither team is heading into the Subway Series on a good note. The Yankees got another clunker from Ian Kennedy and continued their absolute lack of hitting as they fell easily to Tampa. In dropping three-of-four to the Rays, New York managed only six runs in the series and they are now in last place.
