I have been trying to get funding for a project almost exactly like this since 2001. Sculptor Mike Rathbun came up with the idea and I was invited along for the ride for input and tech support. It is always disheartening to see someone beat you to fruition on an idea. You also get suspicious. At any rate here was Rathbuns implementation the similar idea: "Dig to China"

Coincodentally, the series, 'The Universe; in the History Channel just had an episode concerning gravity and commented on an idea that looks exactly like the image shown here.

If we could build a tunnel like that (pretty much impossible), the shuttle car would accelerate under earth's gravity and then decelerate, coming to a stop right at the edge of the hole on the other side. The whole trip would take only 42 minutes no matter where the two ends of the tunnel were, even China (longer distances, faster speeds).
