Brazilian Business Paper's Nuanced Grasp of Economics Highlighted in Ad Campaign

The image below isn’t a rejected Rage Against the Machine album cover, but rather an ad campaign for a leading Brazilian business newspaper, Gazeta Mercantil. Designed by illustrator Pedro Izique for the São Paulo office of ad agency JWT, the print ad redesigns the Dollar, Euro and Yen with images of “some of the most important events of the last century.”

For the U.S., that means 9/11, pot, oil, war and Arlington Cemetery. The slogan? “Understand the real value of money”… man. The only thing missing is an image of Che Guevara bayoneting George Bush as he bites into the neck of the Statue of Liberty, but with a little photoshop, this could make the perfect dorm room conversation piece. High res versions are here, so go nuts, hippies.

Why is the Challenger explosion going upwards? Is that because gravity is upside down in Brazil?

  • slappy

    Its right on the money.

Great work of art, albeit hackneyed lefty propaganda - kind of the liberal nutcase version of some socially conservative nutcase montage of aborted fetuses. Visually, it is pretty damn cool.

Also love the tone of the post - nothing wrong with defiantly proclaiming a... centrist take on it. There are plenty of posts on Gothamist coming from the lefty choir - not that there's anything wrong with that. Now what Gothamist needs is some obnoxious conservative contributor to heckle. Picking on Jen Chung's grammar is so damn old!

    Holy crap this is awesome!

    Trite and heavy-handed? Swell.

Yeah really Europe without Nazis? Like money didn't have anything to do with that.

  • EastRiver

Europe gets off easy. Even blown up I see only the slightest reference to their racism. C'mon, where are the swastikas?

  • chuzzlewit

hey - that's OUR a-bomb on that yen note!

  • starrygordon

Che Guevara bit the neck of George W. Bush? No wonder he's dead.

A nifty piece of art, if somewhat topical. If it annoys morons, so much the better.

    Pot? Really?

  • matty

I'm not sure I get it.

  • matthew

Those are stunning! At least as pieces of art, that is.

I disagree, I quite enjoy John's writing style and acerbic wit. And these ads are pretty cool... and I sincerely hope someone takes him up on the Bush/Liberty/Che offer, and one-ups it with Marx and Adam Smith duking it out in the background, while John Maynard Keynes shotguns a beer.

  • bugsinamber

    i second that.

  • yakatori

    These are great

John, you're really a classless moron.
