Pencil This In
COMEDY: Demetri Martin (pictured) and some (we hear, A-list) friends will be delivering some new material tonight at Rififi. Can't make it? He'll be back the 20th, 27th and June 3rd.
10 p.m. // Rififi [332 E 11th St] // $5
EVENT: Sure, YouTube is good for a laugh or two during the workday, but as an artistic muse? Artists Sue de Beer, Matthew Higgs and Matthew Ronay have all (against all odds) found art at the URL, and tonight they bring their favorite clips to show before discussing how the website has inspired them. Huh. (More details here.)
7 p.m. // The Kitchen [512 W 19th St] // $5
THEATER: The 2008 Tony Award nominees were announced today, and since we’ve done all we can to get you to see Passing Strange – beyond buying your ticket and ushering you to a seat – we’re going to recommend another nominated musical, the revival of South Pacific at Lincoln Center. The 1949 Pulitzer Prize winner by Rogers and Hammerstein covers the life-changing experiences of Americans stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. Big Ben Brantley at the Times is throwing around superlatives like “rapturous,” “reinvigorated” and “sensually fluid.” – John Del Signore
7 p.m. // Lincoln Center Theater-Vivian Beaumont [150 West 65th Street] // Ticket prices vary
MUSIC: Apparently the band Filter is back, and they're playing Mercury Lounge tonight -- a more intimate space than they're used to from their "Hey Man, Nice Shot" glory days. Re-watch the video here, and get psyched?
8 p.m. // Mercury Lounge [217 E Houston St] // $10

South Pacific was the best evening I've had in the theater in many years. Even the overture got a standing ovation. Tickets, however, are tough: I wanted to buy a pair for mom for mother's day and the soonest (before the Tony nominations were announced) were July 4th weekend.
Not so tough to see Passing Strange, however. Half price tickets still available on broadwaybox and other discount sites. House was nearly half empty on a recent Friday evening when I saw the show.
