Big Apple Barbecue Block Party Details Announced

051208bigapplebbq.jpg

Barbecue fans will want to start bracing their colons for the 6th Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party, which has been announced for June 7th and 8th in Madison Square Park. Gothamist tore through the festival of regional barbecue last year, devouring everything from pork shoulder to Brunswick stew to candied ribs.

New York will be well represented this year by Hill Country, Rack and Soul, Blue Smoke, and Dinosaur Bar-B-Que; other purveyors range from L.A.’s Mr. Cecil’s California Ribs to The Pit, based in Raleigh, North Carolina. In addition to all the food (which usually goes for about $8 a plate), free seminars and cooking demonstrations by top pitmasters will be held, first-come, first-served.

Last year the long lines made us vow to take advantage of the FastPass available to American Express card members – it gets you $100 to redeem on food and access to those heavenly express lines, facilitating maximum ‘cue consumption. Check the website for details and additional vendor announcements.

More like Big Apple Cluster F$%k.

Every time I've tried to go (two years in a row) it's been so crowded that I walked away, tail between legs, and went to Live Bait on 23rd St. That place stinks, by the way. If you want good food and a good vibe go to Dinosaur BBQ.

Are there vegetarian options?

NY has great BBQ now, it's amazing how far we've come in the last 5 years.

Used a Fast Pass last year and had no problems. It was a great time! I do recommend getting there early rather than late though. Prime park space goes fast.

If my colon were any more "braced", it'd be on the Jerry Lewis Telethon.

I went last year without a speed pass and still loved it. Just go and don't have your heart set on any certain one and just hop in whatever has the shortest line.

What you see in the photo is Ed Mitchell(left side) of Wilson NC smoking "Whole pig BBQ"
he is recently out of jail in NC for tax evasion but makes plenty
$$$$$$ here yum yum.
If you are so inclined to eat
piggies. He has won several BBQ pitmaster awards.

I used to have a fake ID in college that was from Wilson, NC.

but I lived in NC so its not that random.

The crowd pic on the Big Apple BBQ website doesn't make me eager to attend--it just looks like a mass of people and not enough booths. No one is eating, either.

I'm excited for the BBQ and hope lines move quickly. The food looks good and the music too. Keep your fingers X-ed for good weekend weather :)
