Last Night's Action: Igawa Does Disappoint

2006_04_syankeeslogo.jpg

  • Tigers 6, Yankees 5: It's official. Kei Igawa still stinks. He lasted three innings but somehow managed to give up 11 hits and six runs. He didn't walk or strike out a batter, meaning he left everything in the hands of his defense. With Derek Jeter and Wilson Betemit manning the left side of the infield, that's not a good idea. Jeter made an error that was later changed to a hit and Betemit showed the range of a traffic cone in a three-run third. Detroit tacked on two more in the fourth. It's a good thing they did. Nominal closer Todd Jones almost blew a 6-2 lead in the ninth, but he got Shelley Duncan to line out to center field.

  • The Mets and the Reds had their Friday-night affair rained out, and they will play a split-admission doubleheader Saturday. Johan Santana will start the afternoon game, and Mike Pelfrey, who was set to start Friday night, will start the nightcap. They will be bringing back catcher Ramon Castro from the disabled list for Raul Casanova.
