Harrowing Testimony from Slain Grad Student's Father

Yesterday, the father of the Columbia graduate student who died after running into traffic--while trying to flee a teen attacker--testified in Family Court yesterday.

A 14-year-old boy, Sheldon J., admitted to punching 24-year-old Minghui Yu on a traffic median near the Columbia campus; Yu ran into busy Broadway traffic and was fatally hit by a car. The Post reports that testimony from Yu's father, who traveled from China with his wife, moved the defendant and his mother to tears:

"It is the tradition of the Chinese people for their children to support their parents when they grow old," a crying Zhaofu Yu told Manhattan Family Court Judge Jane Pearl. "The only thing we will have is deepest sorrow surrounded by bittersweet memories. We have to face every day with the unspeakable grief of the total loss of joy in our lives."

..."We are both in our 50s and Minghui Yu was our only child. All of his grandparents are in their 80s. For the sake of their health, they have not been told of the death of their grandchild," Yu said.

The father, unable to choke back his tears, said, "Even now, we can't believe what happened. Minghui Yu was our light, our future, our hope, our support. This has swept away our happiness...Our mutual suffering and anguish is indescribable...If it was not for the support of from our friends, family and those close to us...our lives would collapse."

Yu added, "We thought public safety around the campus was good enough so we'd never have to worry about him."

Sheldon J., who was charged with second-degree manslaughter, has pleaded guilty.

NYis? Are you going to start arguing with a bunch of worthless pieces of shit no matter how large they are two on one, or are you going to flee the situation? He chose to flee and unfortunately he was hit by an auto.

The fat fuck kid will probably be in and out of the prison system until he dies. He will never ever become a solid citizen mark my word. Kill him now and make his life better.

  • nyishome

    himself from 14 yr olds?

geez. what was the build of these two guys?

  • sonyactivision

Here's the deal: you want a check from the government to support your whoring ways? Your tubes get tied. End of fucking story. Those ghetto garbages need to just disappear, and the best way to disappear them is to never let them be born in the first place.

does that sting jen? nah im just kidding, am i a racist if i equally hate everyone?

  • nik13

Maybe Sheldon could be sent to China & rendered into

one of the bodies at South Street Seaport? We could use more diversity there. Little loss for the humankind & big gain for NY taxpayers.

  • Snoopy

Why is it that chinks have no problem getting into the mainstream of America after being listed on the yellow scourge list at the turn of the nineteenth century and people of color just can't get it together?

Young black thug causes death of grad student with a bright future yet not a peep from Al Sharpton. Crack dealing thug dies and Al Sharpton wants to shut down the city. Unbelievable.

i grew up in texas for 10 years of my life. You would think there would be much more racism there will all the kkk running around.

Ive lived in nyc more than 12 years now and everyday it suprises me how fucking racist ignorant black people(aka ghetto folk) are to asians. I cant count how many times ive have these racists encounters. Instead of banging heads with them something inside me just feels pity and all i can do is laugh at them for there ignorance and for fear of loosing my shirt and having to pay for there hospital bills.

There is no marketing machine gloriflying the ghetto stereotype in truth it comes right out of there mouth and actions.

Agree with you dorchid. The "ghetto" mindset disgusts me and disturbs me. It is as if we are in a race to the bottom with the popularization of things like "pimp my ride" and other nonsense.

The fragmentation of American society though, is a long-standing trend that might not reverse itself. After all, this is a grand experiment in society that began with a separation of races and ethnic groups, including many who have successfully assimilated into the American "whole."

I am not sure if the romanticized notion of striving for a middle class existence (which in effect, is the American Dream) still holds sway over enough people for the society to be held together. It's as if we've retreated to new enclaves based on race, wealth, and religion. Perhaps this is nothing new - running hard to stand in place. Still, I hope that we are making real progress.

Long-winded, roundabout way of saying that I do agree that we need to spend more on education. At the same time, the cancerous attitudes and behaviors of different communities must be excoriated if we are to restore a common foundation for building a civil society. In that regard, I understand some of the comments here.

Anna, I didn't grow up around White or Black people. Actually I grew up around Asians more than anything. And in New York, which is arguably less racist a city than other parts of America, I see at lot of the things in your post. There are black people here who are hard-working, law-abiding citizens, and who contribute a lot to their communities and neighborhoods. But I also see this ghetto mindset that exists in the minds of whites, blacks, and hispanics (notice I don't say asians), that is basically a mental prison, keeping whole communities from pursuing their full potential.

I see some truth in berniegoetz's comment that this young kid is just going to go to prison and see his father. Because honestly, who else can he relate to other than black males in a similar situation?

Americans first have to get past this ghetto mindset, not just people IN the 'ghetto' but also the ppl outside the ghetto who perpetuate it with their racist, separatist attitudes. We have to spend less money on prisons and more money on education if we expect this cycle to end.

"Sheldon could remain in prison until he turns 18."

Snoopy, this is obviously meant to be a sick joke by Jenspellnogood. It's a rehashing of the familiar "Who's on First?" joke, except that it's not funny and the use of "Moolie" is despicable, since it's a racial slur.

  • Snoopy

With all the technology today can't someone put a chemical in the housing project's water supply to sterilize these people?

Jenspell, are you sure that is the official testimony? If so, it proves that little Moolie 1 is probably guilty as charged.

  • Anna_Merkin

Some of you are animals. "In the black community, I guess this makes him a 'prodigy.'"

Please tell us, what is the "black community" and how did you come to such an insightful conclusion?

You see, I grew up around hundreds of black people that one might consider a community and not one of them glorified violence. In fact, they were hard-working people who believed in the American Dream, went to church on Sundays, paid their taxes, and kept their homes/property clean. They are not an anomaly; they are simply middle and working-class folks striving for a better life, much like many other Americans.

These same people have no love for thugs like the ones who chased that poor college student to his death. They also have no respect for the likes of Al Sharpton and others who trade on historical (and apparently, current) racism in order to maintain influence and gain the spotlight. They view him in the same vein as people like Pat Buchanan and Rush Limbaugh. These people taught their children how to conduct themselves and be good citizens. They taught them the importance of education and hard work. Most importantly, they taught them to take responsibility for their actions.

Of course, you'll never mention anyone like these people because they don't fit into your neatly-defined world view in which blacks are criminals, lazy, and entitled. The fact is that those elements exist - and exist in large visible numbers, but they do not and will not define the "black community." They are simply individuals who have chosen not to live by society's rules and are reaping the consequences. Yes, some are trapped in an unfortunate cycle of poverty-violence-crime-prison/death - and this is as much a failure of their homes as it is of many state-sponsored systems. It is as much a failure as the poverty and widespread meth addiction that exists in many rural areas of America.

It is not acceptable to define rural Americans who engage in outlaw behavior as "animals" who represent the "white community" anymore than your assertions. So please, stop with the bigoted rantings. It's tiresome.

    drewo-

that is such hippie garbage. You need to put blame where blame is due, on the attacker not the victim or the innocent motorist. Then maybe this city can get tougher on the scum that breeds in the housing projects that infect the city.
