ART: We've been loving the Love=Love show at Jen Bekman Gallery, which just opened earlier this week. The exhibition by Kent Rogowski is comprised of six large-scale photographic prints based on altered puzzles, as well as a selection of the original objects. Think of a puzzle collision resulting in collage art; also: see pictured.
Friday and Saturday // Noon to 6 p.m. // Jen Bekman Gallery [6 Spring St] // Free
DESIGN: This weekend brings the 6th annual BKLYN Designs, a three-day exhibition in DUMBO featuring "the work of 70 of Brooklyn's brightest stars of contemporary furnishings. In addition, there will be an exhibit by Pratt Institute students, plus a Design Accessories Market called BD+, where small home and fashion accessories will be available for purchase." Admission includes demonstrations, presentations, panels and conversations on sustainability and going "green".
All Weekend // 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. // Dumbo Arts Center [69 Washington St, Dumbo] // $15
THEATER: Van Driver is late night theater at its loopiest. After a short but hilarious handful of performances last year, the far-out Waldo “Van” Driver (myspace) is back with his family and friends to totally change your entire uptight perspective on shit – and maybe even hit you up for a small loan. Actor/writer Jason Schuler plays the titular decaying hippie with just the right mix of satire and affection; having concocted an elaborate backstory for Driver, the spoof never sinks into cliché, and the comedy of errors that ensnares his strung-out family is funnier than a barrel of nitrous oxide. And a cameo by Nellie the Psychic Chicken, who passed away last fall (scroll down), has been replaced by other surprise guests. – John Del Signore
Friday // 10 p.m. // Cherry Lane Theater [38 Commerce Street] // Tickets cost $12 in advance, $20 at the door
ART: The 3rd Ward gets DEVO'd out this weekend with The Super Thing: NYC goes DEVO, a group show experience featuring art, adventure and music. The "exhibition and music event is dedicated to the zealous, jerky synth-powered, midwestern heroes of DEVO and showcases art which shares their bold aesthetics, politics and humor. DEVO has already inspired legions with their politics, new wave getup of nuclear hazmat suits, retro-futuristic plastic pomps, and ziggurat-shaped energy dome flower pot hats and you can expect the same from their art."
Saturday // 8 p.m. // The Gallery at 3rd Ward [195 Morgan Ave, Brooklyn] // Free, RSVP here
MUSIC: This weekend is your last chance EVER to see The Narrator; the band plays on a bill with Oxford Collapse, The End of the World and The Pathways at The Red Door this Saturday. We highly recommend checking out Oxford Collapse at this somewhat make-shift venue.
Saturday // 9 p.m. // The Red Door [140 West 24th St] // $8
The Brooklyn County Fair moves into indie territory and celebrates country music in Williamsburg. Join in the fun, and catch performances by The Flanks (CD Release), The Newton Gang (EP release), Yarn, Jon Itkin, The Doc Marshalls, & Jamie Lun Smith and The Red Tail Hawk Band. Yeehaw!
Sunday // 1 p.m. // Galapagos [70 N 6th St, Williamsburg] // Free
THEATER: Rich with song, dance and lefty politics, a new production of Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle features 13 actors playing over 80 roles to tell the story of peasants in a war-torn Russian village who stage a play to celebrate their new communal land share. Chris Harcum says the Hipgnosis ensemble has created a “remarkable” show with minimal props and lots of ingenuity: “The heightened theatricality seems to grow by what it is fed on. By intermission, you'll be hungry for more.” ENDS TODAY. – John Del Signore
Sunday // 7 p.m. // The Green Room [45 Bleecker Street] // Tickets cost $19
