Obama Hits D.C., Clinton Cuts Spending

Barack Obama's and Hillary Clinton's campaigns continued their push for the Democratic nomination, but only one seemed energized. Obama made an unexpected appearance at the House Congressional chambers, causing "Obamamania [to descend] onto the floor of the House in full force."

Representative Yvette Clarke, who represents Brooklyn, had him sign the Daily News cover with him on it, and Republican Representative Illeana Ros-Lehthinen told Politco that the group of elementary school children she was escorting screamed, "It's Barack Obama!" Ros-Lehthinen said, “The kids were very excited. Like rock star excited.

Clinton has been campaigning in West Virginia, Oregon and South Dakota, as the NY Times reports the campaign has had to cut spending, "likelihood that Mrs. Clinton will lend her campaign more of her own money beyond the $11 million she has already provided." And she's facing criticism for her words in a USA Today interview, where she said, "Sen. Obama's support among working, hardworking Americans, white Americans, is weakening again." While Clinton used exit polls as her reason for her statement, Representative Charles Rangel of NY said, "I can't believe Sen. Clinton would say anything that dumb."

And the Reverend Al Sharpton--not a superdelegate but certainly a noisy supporter or detractor--told NY1's Inside City Hall that Clinton needs to exit the race, "The audience is gone, the lights are down, you're getting ready to cut the mics off and you are still on the stage singing. It's over, it's all right, it's over. Come sing another day, but this show is over Senator Clinton."

"Sen. Obama's support among working, hardworking Americans, white Americans, is weakening again."

You know, wow, I already read this in the Times, but seeing it again it is looking so much worse. Forget about bittergate, lets parse this.

First, multiculturalism (or, to put it another way, anti-racism) is a core Dem value. Sure, we know there are white folks out there who will not vote for Obama because he's black, but the position of any Democrat should be "that's not OK." To tout that as your strong point is deeply cynical.

But also, look at the connection between "white Americans" and "hardworking Americans." She's tapping into the idea that minorities are privileged freeloaders.

Al Sharpton is my new best friend.

I'm finally voting for Obama. I know I've been a quasi Hilary supporter before. The choice between a black guy, a chick, and a old geezer was hard but in the end I choose Obama. First, cause why not, eh? Can't be worse than Bush right? Second, the thought of rednecks foaming at the mouth and white people becoming scared shitless that their social paradigm will change makes me enthusiastic. Third, that shepard Fairey poster is fantastic! And Lastly, we were promised the Apocalypse during Bush's term but we didn't get it. We got close and there is still a few months left in his tenure to finish the job but at least Bush was interesting in the news. Every bad thing that happened during the Bush Administration was almost Biblical in it's absurdity. If Obama turns out to be shitty and idealism is turned on it's head and perverted then Obama must fiinish the job. You ever watch Troy? the movie was entertaining cause it was the fall of it. Nobody watched Troy, cause unemployment was at 5% and the state of the economy was good.

"But also, look at the connection between "white Americans" and "hardworking Americans." She's tapping into the idea that minorities are privileged freeloaders."

I couldn't agree more. I have lost all respect for Hill. She has to go.

I thought the good Rev. is busy getting arrested. What's Tawana's view on this?

I know many of you will say I shouldn't be disappointed, and maybe you're right. But so be it. I find this terribly disappointing.

The only good that may come out of that quote is that maybe once and for all she's jumped the shark.

agreed. I find this terribly disappointing as well.

Why oh why will she not exit?

Her time is up it's inevitable. Best thing to come of this is that now Dems AND Republicans can both see the selfish "me first" mentality that defines the Clintons. When Bill should have resigned for his daliance with an intern (admittedly not that big a deal in hindsight) he simply would not do what was best for the country, and decided to "stand his ground" and drag us all through a public airing of dirty laundry WHEN HE KNEW HE WAS WRONG.

Now we get that same scheming mentality all over again. Hill will not step aside and do what's best for the country because THAT IS NOT HER PRIORITY.

Like she said at the begginng, she's "in it to win it".

Personally, I'll take Obama's "Yes WE can" attitude any day.

Or...

Democrats have the Jackass, Republicans have the Elephant... perhaps, Hill should start her own party... her mascot: A DEAD HORSE

Ride it into the sunset, Hill!

"Sure, we know there are white folks out there who will not vote for Obama because he's black, but the position of any Democrat should be 'that's not OK.'"

Obama got 90% of the black vote in South Carolina. Is THAT ok? Whites supporting a white candidate is bad but blacks uniting around a black candidate is good? These silly double standards cannot be ignored. More and more "progress" means blacks getting to do something that whites cannot do rather than blacks getting to do the same things whites can.

Guilty white liberal apologists will never, ever understand that a majority of whites do not sit around stargazing and ignoring these double standards. Want proof? Look who's in the damn white house. Karl Rove made it a mission to exploit white anger and resentment. Keep ignoring the double-standards, keep ignoring that Obama referred to whites as "crackers" in his own book, keep ignoring that Obama went to Trinity for 20 years and claims never to have sat through one of Wright's shitstorms. You can ignore it but when democrats and republicans vote together in November, you will find that many do not ignore it.

Go ahead an write some lazy ad-hom retort or toss out some clever pejoratives. Call me an "angry white male." I am and am damn proud of it.

I said it before, I'll say it again. I just don't have a good feeling about Obama as president. He talks a good talk, but when push comes to shove, I think he's too much of a lightweight to get anything done. All fluff, no substance. He'd be somewhere between Ronnie Reagan and the first Bush in terms of effectiveness.

"Obama got 90% of the black vote in South Carolina. Is THAT ok? Whites supporting a white candidate is bad but blacks uniting around a black candidate is good?"

Yep. The difference is that there is still, in this day and age, an authentic minority agenda. Blacks and latinos still face unique challenges on poverty and education, and even beating down a criminal culture that is glamorized by the media. Black voters are very likely acting in their interest to vote for a black candidate.

I would also say that it makes sense for a woman (or some guy who is particularly interested in feminism) to vote Hillary because of that. There's still some authentic feminist agenda out there, and it makes some sense for women to trust Hillary to act effectively on that.

But, what's the "white agenda"? There is none. "I think minorities get too many special privileges"? "I don't trust Obama because he's black"? Go vote Republican if that's what you believe - those aren't Democratic party values.

she was done long before this USA Today quote. but if it takes that quote to make people finally realize that Hil has to go, then so be it.

If you ask me, I lost all respect for Hil after her hubby started his whining and foot-stomping on her behalf. Ugh. this made me see both Bill and Hil in a very unflattering light. It seemed less like campaigning and more closely tantrum throwing, like they both want to "get their way".

Mind you, the fact that white voters in the swing states voted for Hillary isn't in itself bad, but Hillary's argument is that she's a better candidate because these people will never vote for Obama. That's bad, it's basically endorsing racism.

Imagine if the shoe were on the other foot - Obama saying that he's the better pick because some people just aren't ready for a woman president. Happily, that's not something he would say.

Berniegoetz (geez, I'm beginning to wonder if you actually are the real BG), you seem to think that somehow Barack is steeped in reverse-racist hate. But, it just ain't there. It's not in his message at all. I'd love to see this "cracker" reference you speak of, so we can see how blatantly you are reading it out of context.

i dont beleive hilary will get anything done any more than obama.

but more clinton years is NOT what this country needs. i beleive that she AND BILL (because yes, they will BOTH be president if she happens were to win the general election. no doubt about it.) are more interested in creating a dynasty than leading the country.

I don't support Hillary or McCain. I support Nader because he knows who the real crooks are -- corporations. The only color in this country is green and myopic bleeding hearts are all too happy to help the power elite divide and demography the lower and middle classes through identity politics.

Somewhere along the way in this election cycle, Hillary just got too old. Obama's starting to gray around the temples, but he's technically still 'fresh horses'. John Mc Cain is just a cryovac container of Nixonian fairy dust that settled to the bottom, mixed with old geezer drippings and solidified into a hardened mass of "W".
