Protesting the Greenpoint Oil Spill in the Subway

The presence of oil in parts of Greenpoint is well documented, but it looks like someone wants the oil to be cleaned up. This morning there was artwork in the Queens-bound Nassau Avenue G stop asking for a stop to the oil spills. The artwork shows drops of oil on the walls of the station, pools of oil collected on the floors, and paper towels for straphangers to clean up the spill. Reader Shannan tells us that the paper towels said something to the effect of "no more oil spills."

If the oil piece is still up or you have photos of it, email us at photos@gothamist.com or tag your photo 'gothamist' on flickr.

Update: Kara sent over a couple more images of the Nassau oil spill. At the pools of oil at the bottom is the address greenpointoilspill.com. The new photos show that the paper towels say "What is it doing to our bodies?" in three languages.

I'm surprised the rats at that station didn't eat the paper towels!!

Hrm... looks like it must be around finals for NYC art students.

the homeless have toilet paper now

Kudos to that artist - that's amazing!

why can't hipsters in Greenpoint and wBurg live with their two-headed babies? they will have a heads up on the competition in the future. Hey, you paid to live in a dump, deal with it.

Why are there such pointless idiots living in Brooklyn? Why? All that's gonna happen is those papertowels are gonna litter the entire platform --or worse be used to clean noses & butts-- and then disposed of on the tracks to create fires just in time for rush hour...

I seen it this morning. But i was on the other side of the platform. Well now i know what it says. It will probably be gone by the time i get home. I guess the artist lives on top of the oil spill. I however don't. yay

What kind of idiot knowingly moves into an area on top of a oil spill?

This wasn't a big secret, tards. We've known about it for years. Thats what happens in a district that used to contain oil refineries.

30 million gallons. That's big money at today's prices. Rough calculations say almost $90 million at $124/barrel. Why hasn't somebody set up a company to recover black gold in Greenpoint!

^You read my mind! Aren't there any mexicans in Greenpoint that don't mind the extra trabajar to make some nice verde?

If anyone has seen a map of the actual spill area, they would know it's only in a certain small part of Greenpoint and certainly not in the entire neighborhood.
