Marshall Stack, for suds and snacks. And during the summer, I'm a fan of the West Side Boat Basin. It's crowded and noisy, but it's right by the water.

Montero's on Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn Heights. Truly old school. Circa 1940's neon sign out front, weathered interior, cheap beer and spirits, and never, never crowded. And Charlie, the owner's son's dog, who is often in residence, is a good kisser.

I will totally back up the Harry Boland's recommendation on 9th St. and 5th Ave. It's a neighborhood joint with a heterogenous crowd. The bar staff could not be better and the owner is a super nice guy. It's like going into an older NYC; it's awesome.

Sheer sentimentality: it's gotta be the Grassroots Tavern on St. Mark's. Getting drunk in a family-friendly atmosphere in Brooklyn: The Lighthouse Tavern on 5th Ave., Park Slope Regularly Undisappointing: 7B, but everyone knows that. Everytime I go to NYC in the summer I hit up the Gowanus Lounge. Somehow I can always get a seat and the beers overfloweth. Def one of my favorite places.

it's not in my neighborhood, but i've always like the white horse tavern in the west village. closer to me, i like MUG's in williamsburg.

i've always been a big fan of 11th street bar on 11th street between avenues a and b. it is laid back atmosphere, never pretentious, and never overcrowded.
