Pencil This In

In case you missed it, here's our list of ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo around town; if you aren't in the mood for margs tonight, here are some alternatives:

EVENT: NonsenseNYC points us to a Potluck and Horseshoe Crab Mating Bike Ride. Need more details? "For over 300 million years, when high-tide, the full moon and springtime collide, horseshoe crabs have been gathering by the thousands to spawn. These little dinosaur tanks are expected to descend on the Brooklyn shoreline Monday night, May 5. So, we're having a rockin potluck to fill our tanks before we head out. Please bring a dish to share and include fresh or local ingredients if you can. Full bellied, we'll take a leisurely ride to the beach for quite a spectacle." Non-bikers are encouraged to take the subway to the crabtacular event.

5:30 p.m. dinner, 7:30 p.m. ride // 1130 Bergen Street, Brooklyn // RSVP, details at NonsenseNYC

0805hynes.jpgREADING: Charles Hynes is more than just the Kings County District Attorney, he's also an author. His debut novel, Triple Homicide, was released last year and is, of course, crime-centric; the NY Times says it is "paced like a 'Law & Order' spinoff." He'll be reading tonight from its pages, which are authentically filled with murder, the NYPD and much more.

6 p.m. // Barnes & Noble [106 Court St, Brooklyn] // Free

MUSIC: Tonight the Friction show hits up Mercury Lounge again with a triple-threat lineup. Headliners F*ck Buttons will bring some late night experimental noise, but we recommend showing up for the openers: Pattern is a Movement and Sightings. PiM recently played our 5 year anniversary show and covered Bjork's song "Enjoy" for a Stereogum compilation. Blog darlins', indeed.

7 p.m. // Mercury Lounge [217 E Houston St] // $12

CARTOONS: One dozen cartoons, including “Porky’s Duck Hunt” (1937), “Heckling Hare” (1941) and “What’s Opera, Doc?” (1957), will screen at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ “Monday Nights with Oscar series. The “Putting Looney in the Toons” event will bring the short cartoons of Avery and Maltese to the big screen. More details here.

7:30 p.m. // Academy Theater [111 East 59th St] // $5

THEATER: Here’s the premise for Retrograde: “Considering Johannes Kepler's Three Laws of Planetary Motion, the Sun is only the center of gravity to a planet at one focus. To compensate, the self-generated gravity a planet creates by simply spinning around its own axis attracts the other planets to orbit. When applied to human interaction, the individual lives we live ultimately have a gravitational affect on others and fate (the Sun) is only equal to that force.” Now go watch it applied to “the contemporary culture of twenty-somethings in New York City,” brought to you by the All Balls Out Ensemble. – John Del Signore

10 p.m. // Under St. Marks [94 St. Marks Place] // Tickets cost $15.

NonsenseNYC might want to check their lunar calendar. Tonight is a new moon. The next full moon isn't until the 20th.
