NYPD Goes Super High Tech to Fight Crime
The NYPD has plans to spend $30 million to build a "super high-tech" anti-crime center. The luxe crime fighting emporium will feature high definition tvs to keep watch over the city, with cameras pointed from subway stations to underwater. The 22,000 square foot Joint Operations Command Center is scheduled to be up and running by 2011 and will be annexed to Police HQ.
The New York Post describes how the center will work. "Cops will continuously monitor the screens to pinpoint suspicious activity or zero in on specific areas in the event of breaking crime." In addition to capturing conventional crime on tape, the center will be linked to federal and state authorities ot combat terrorism. The City is enacting a Lower Manhattan Security Initiative, which will identify every car and loitering pedestrian hanging out downtown.

How about taking that money to give it to the new hires??? Do we really need an anit crime center for 30 million??????
Re: #1
I suspect this technology is intended, for better or for worse, to replace new hires. No sick days, no lunch breaks, no maternity leave, etc.
Holy Batcave, Batman! Will this this "super high-tech anti-crime center" beam a batsignal in the sky when I open up a dispute on Ebay?
That picture brings back warm memories of 70s Saturday mornings. Maybe that's what Police Headquarters should do. They have no intention of ever opening up Park Row again, so why not tear it up and create a moat around the headquarters if they're so worried about terrorists?
Um...big brother anyone? Also, why is it just a lower Manhattan initiative?
