N Train Derails Near West 57th Street

2008_05_derail.jpg

At least one subway car on the N line derailed near 57th Street and 7th Avenue around 5 p.m. this afternoon. WABC 7 is reporting the incident involved one car while WCBS 2 says two cars derailed and WNBC 4 notes at least three cars were affected. The train was traveling southbound and no passengers seemed injured--just a little shaken up.

The hundreds of passengers were evacuated by a rescue train which took them to the 5th Avenue and 59th street stop. One passenger, a tourist from Indiana, told WCBS 2, "It felt like it stopped abruptly. I didn't know it derailed. They had us sit while they assessed the situation, and told us to stay calm." Another passenger confirmed everyone "stayed calm."

Naturally, there are some diversions: NYC Transit (which calls it "a train with ongoing mechanical problems") is currently running the Bay Ridge-bound R on the F between 36th Street Station in Queens and the 34th Street- Herald Square Station. There is no N train service between the Queensboro Plaza Station and the Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard Station in both directions. Check the MTA's website for the latest.

Update: Authorities are investigating the accident which officials say involved two cars. Let's hope things are up and running by the time of tomorrow morning's commute!

The train engineer probably OD'd on some bad crack.

God I am sick of the subway. It seems like every week,a new story like this pops up.

Anyways, I was scrolling to find another story regarding this, and I ran into this article. I wish every nyc subway patron read this just to know what is proper etiquette on the train.

Man, I can't wait to move to Grenwich.

That's a new train, too.

No wonder it took so fuckin' long. Bah.

Should be a fun commute tomorrow.

Filming of the Taking of Pelham 123?
Glad to hear everyone was ok.

Least it was on a Sunday and not during the weekday or worse rush hour.

IMO further proof that the city should find another firm to operate the subways.

Genius, when was the last time a train derailed? This is NOT common by any means. Not a huge news event, but very rare around here.

Retard.

Shit Happens. Trains derail, even on the best kept train systems.

I would like to comment on the lack of communication at the stations (yet again): I live in Astoria, and when I was heading home yesterday evening at the 5th Ave/59th street stop, there were officials telling everyone coming in that there was no downtown service but that all uptown service was running. The N, as noted above, was not running. After watching a few R's go past, I finally decided I would be on the next train no matter what it was. It's not a huge deal for me (an extra 8 minutes of walking), but it would be for other people who live farther from the R.

During all my time on the platform, there were quite a few station announcements, and not one of them mentioned that there was no Astoria-bound service. Thanks for keeping me updated, MTA.

Kojak speaks the truth.

Grim5w, we won't miss you.
