  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a suspicious fire on Reid Ave. and Jerome Rd. on Staten Island, a naked emotionally disturbed person in the Bronx, and a shooting at Lenox Ave. and Broadway in Manhattan.
  • Pennsylvanians have their acts together. The Flight 93 memorial is halfway finished and should be completed by 2011.
  • Two Newark, NJ men are dead after a gunfight that may have involved an Uzi submachine gun. One neighbor seemed puzzled: "Both are generally good guys. I don't know what happened."
  • A Guatemalan national, Jorge Mario Paredes-Cordova, was brought to NY from Honduras to stand trial for what the government describes as being a "drug kingpin."
  • A small matter in the greater scheme of things, but the hundreds of NY State employees collecting salaries in addition to their pensions are not helping. "About 100 double dippers draw salaries of at least $100,000 on top of their pensions."
  • Fire, building, and safety regulations are for squares. Studio B in Greenpoint is apparently the cool roof top party that can't be stopped.
  • An office building being turned into luxury condos suffered a short setback when a car drove into the scaffolding on Wall St.
  • Northeast Corridor train traffic was disrupted this afternoon after a train from NY killed a man described as a trespasser in NJ.

I just love Newark news. "Both are generally good guys. I don't know what happened."

What happened is two fucking assholes had a go at it. Fortunately there wasn't a loss of human life.

And because this is America and has to do with 9/11 there are complaints that the Shanksville memorial contains Islamic symbols and petitions to shut it down.

The article on the Flight 93 memorial says that it will be 40% completed by 2011, not that it is halfway finished. The title of the article is "Almost Half of Flight 93 Memorial to be Ready by 2011". Construction hasn't even begun yet.
