Short One Leg, But Goat is Long on Friends

albiegoat.jpgAlbie the goat recently lost his leg to amputation, but an animal rights advocate who lost her own leg to illness is doing her best to ease the transition for a goat found in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. Albie was found in the park, after he probably escaped a Brooklyn slaughterhouse.

All four of his legs had sharp indentations, indicating he was probably trussed, as many animals are during transportation and the tight tying damaged Albie's left foreleg circulation. The goat's leg was eventually amputated and now he will be outfitted with a prosthetic limb.

TV producer turned animal rights activist Jenny Brown, who lost a leg to childhood cancer and now runs an upstate animal sanctuary, told the NY Times, “I’ve been an amputee for most of my life, but I can run a farm, I can wrestle animals, I can carry bales of hay, thanks to modern prosthetics. I thought it would be only fair to give Albie the same chance to live a normal life.

One can meet the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary residents and read their stories here. If one would like to donate to help care for the animals, here's a page at the farm sanctuary site. Other animals wind up at other farm sanctuaries, like Denny the goat.

The name Albi[e] only associates with one thing to me now...Albi the racist dragon. Damn you, Flight of the Conchords!!

Childhood can be a difficult time, but it usually doesn't cause loss of limbs.

Methinks there's a missing word.

"after he probably escaping a Brooklyn slaughterhouse."

Seriously.. do any of you review before posting?

These are difficult financial times, so proofreading has been outsourced to developing nations.

Sadly, amsci's post is a fact.

That goat should have been curried and served to poor families over white rice..

What about the last sentence?

"Other animals wind up at other farm sanctuaries like Denny the goat."

Who wrote this? The goat?

Glad the goat escaped and is doing well--goats are a lot like dogs and are really intelligent, and killing them is, well, a little more like barbaric than it is what might be called "respectful of innocent life."

jaja007 should be curried and served to poor (or rich, or middle class) families over any color rice, or put back into the vagina he or she is responsible for keeping clean. Just a humble opinion.

Thanks for posting the sanctuary info, Dave.

I love this story--it's very touching and sweet.

And the typos are my fault--I didn't catch them when I made some changes to the post.

Funny, you get all offended by someone suggesting an animal should be killed and eaten, yet you have no qualms advocating murder and cannibalism.

anyway, great story. Growing up, my cousins had a three-legged dog. She was hit by a car as a puppy, shortly after they got her, and the Vet suggested putting her down. My aunt refused (because a few months earlier, their old dog had died after being hit by a car), and the dog was always perfectly fine running around on three legs like she didn't know she was supposed to have four.

Should have known Chung was behind this. Hogarty is usually pretty good with English and grammar and that kinda stuff that really doesn't seem to appeal to the Jens.

90% of grammatical errors occur when people re-work others' drafts. It's done quickly and without the narrative flow of when you're writing it yourself. I appreciate Jen throwing herself on her sword here, but every good post I write is at least 25% improved by Jen's editing. I'm more than happy to eat a few typos that crop up now and again. If you ever saw the raw feed, you might be horrified.
