Pastor Wright Drowns Out Obama Campaign

2008_04_pastor.jpgBarack Obama's former pastor the Reverend Jeremiah Wright has taken over the spotlight from the candidate as he goes on a speaking tour that provides fodder for Obama's rivals, be they Democrat or Republican.

For instance, the Post reports that Wright "delivered his most brutal wallop to his pal's campaign as he hailed hatemonger Louis Farrakhan and accused the United States of committing terrorism." And the Post front covers it "Pastor Disaster."

The NY Times' Bob Herbert says Wright's "re-emergence...has been devastating," "The Rev. Jeremiah Wright went to Washington on Monday not to praise Barack Obama, but to bury him." Obama has been trying to put distance between himself and the pastor, but Wright's presence is causing concerns among superdelegates.

The Daily News' Errol Morris wonders if a Hillary supporter--and member of the National Press Club--helped organize Wright's Monday speech to aid Clinton. While he can't be sure, Louis writes, "it's safe to say she didn't see any conflict between promoting Wright and supporting Clinton."

And Politico's Mike Allen shared two Blackberry messages received after Wright's speech: From a Democrat--"This wasn't an interview. Or a speech. That was a sermon. With call and response. So now we ALL have seen it. And I for one wanted to leave after 20 seconds, let alone 20 years," and from a Republican, "This is amazing. On CNN now. Every answer is a devastating story."

An AP-Ipsos poll released today says Clinton would beat John McCain by 9 points. Obama and McCain are running even.

"Omega Psi Phi till the day I die" And they are.

  • everydaydreamer

FWIW, Rev. Wright's pose is actually of him "throwing up the hooks," a signal of affiliation with his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi. Jesse Jackson is also a member of this fraternity, as is Vernon Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal.

    That cover is a classic!

"The only think Obama can do is dump this guy. Categorically and without discussion."

Might be happening.. apparently he's giving a response now, but no TV here.

Name one Reverend that has appeared on the front page of the Post and is not an asshole.

  • babyhitler

I agree a lot with what Wright is saying. I'm sure Obama does too. But his two-faced ass just betrayed the pastor so he could sit pretty. Well like Denzel washington said when he played malcolm X: "the chickens have come home to roost. I don't feel sad, I feel glad"

  • Rocknrope

Sommelier, I'm going to take that as sarcasm, interwebs style.

    Wright doesn't think so.

Wright said. “He did not denounce me. He distanced himself from some of my remarks, like most of you, never having heard the sermon, all right? …

“He didn't distance himself. He had to distance himself, because he's a politician, from what the media was saying I had said, which was [portrayed as] anti-American. … He did, as I said, what politicians do.”

Did he just call Obama a politician?

If Wright is indeed a self-hating black man then it helps explain why he's on a barnstorming tour to apparently bring down Obama.

    (Great one Tim.)

  • Sommelier

Rev. Wright is taking the bullet for Sen. Obama. He's comig out loud & clear that this is HIS message... and he's verbally distancing himself from Obama, in what can only be seen as a Christlike act of self-sacrifice. I'm surprised that the pundits haven't seen it this way.

How come no one ever talks about this guy's craziest belief? Namely, that by telepathically telling a 2000-year-old dead guy that he loves him and his father (which are actually one in the same), when he dies he will go to the super-happiest place ever instead of the place where he will be eternally tortured.

Cage match: Rev. Wright vs. Roger Clemens.

  • likesrudylikesbooty

Any achievement this jackass has under his belt is tossed out by his comments. He pretty much came out and reinforced what all the critics were saying.

I'm not sure how you can spin his referring to italians as "onion noses" as anything but racist.

He called the crucifixion of Jesus a "lynching...Italian style".

At least the Howard Dean Scream was funny. I'll be content to let Obama stew in this for awhile. I'm still pissed he threw his own grandmother under the bus in part to try and justify this guy's rants.

How many times have Bush's religious advisors said things like America caused 911, the people in New Orleans deserved it because of their sins, and AIDS is God punishing gays? What Wright says isn't nearly as bad as those people.

Alex, you're preaching to the choir, so to speak. Those of us with little tolerance of religion in politics are more likely to be in the Democratic party (or at least NOT in the Republican party), so we expect better behavior for those associated with such candidates. People making a fuss are NOT fans of right wing preachers, so this is not a valid argument. Obama knows this, and I think he's been fairly effective and polite in putting his distance between the two.

Yes Charlesbklyn, separation of church and state. If he truly possessed the "character" you believe, he'd STFU for the sake of Obama's campaign. What does he really hope to accomplish other than self-promotion?

Just because you are ordained, you don't get a free pass for oral diarrhea.

I thought this was the most interesting quote from Wright:

"Louis Farrakhan is not my enemy. He didn't put me in chains, he did not put me in slavery, and he didn't make me this color."

Which is especially funny because if someone did a DNA analysis, Wright would almost certainly show up as being far more white than black. I wouldn't be surprised if he is less than one-eighth black.

I thought this was the most interesting quote from Wright:

Sounds like a self-hating black man to me.

Meanwhile, somewhere out on the campaign trail McCain is flying under the radar.

BTW- Is it just me or does Wright look like he is walking like an Egyptian?

  • zodak

    agreed bxbrian!

obama's going to lose now thanks to this idiot.

this guy is turning into dean's "yeaah scream"

    rev. wright, please, stfu.

This is completely outrageous. Mr. Wright served in the military for 6 years and is a long time religious minister. I believe he should be given a lot more respect and deference. Who is anyone to question this man's patriotism and character. America is losing its dignity and sense of reason with the constant bashing of this man. The truth is he is being attacked by men, and women, of lesser stature and character. We would only be fools to believe them. Separation of church and state? Or is this only a divide for white people? Black people have a lot to be aggrieved about, and we shame ourselves once again by lambasting what and how black churches talk, preach and pray. Shame on us all ... again.
