Coldplay Comes Back with Free MSG Show

0804martinpaltrow.jpgChris Martin will be (attempting to) steal the spotlight back from his wife Gwyneth Paltrow soon. She's been in the news for fainting from live-food fasts and being honored by Food Bank NYC, and you know he must be shivering there in her shadow. Well not for long; Martin and his band Coldplay have just announced a free show to help hype up their forthcoming album.

If you're a fan of the fellas, set that alarm clock early tomorrow as the contest for free tickets will be announced on their website at 7:15 a.m. (you'll also be allowed to download their new song, "Violet Hills," at that time).

The show isn't until June 23rd, and will be held at Madison Square Garden. Can anyone recall a free concert at MSG prior to this?

The single is "Violet Hill," not "Violet".

7:15am? Seriously? Why?

I think I could pretty reliably rank how much I like various bands by how early I would be willing to wake up* to get info about tickets to a free show. Coldplay's time is probably about 7:45. The Hold Steady is probably about 5:30.

* Or, for bands I REALLY like a lot, how many hours I would be willing to consecutively stay awake, since there is no time I would not wake up for free tickets to the rumored Led Zeppelin reunion tour, and I could definitely see myself staying up for 48 straight hours of need be.

Oh the largesse is unbelievable. Is the concert free? I doubt that. No. They are giving out free tickets to the concert. How many, and should I plug my nose with cotton if I win those coveted tickets?

The group is lucky if they fill up the first three rows, most of them being family and friends.

My advice, "Gwyneth dumb the guy."

Well at least she's still pretty...

"shivering in her shadow" - nice allusion to coldplay songs. I blame Gwyneth for the wackness that happened to coldplay. I remember when Parachutes came out in 2000 and they were an amazing band that I discovered and listened to all the time and they were labeled the next coming of Radiohead. Then Paltrow comes along and turns them into the James Blunt band. such promise wasted by the Paltrow.

its a free show NOT A CONCERT (so there has to be some difference -- right??)

Coldplay is MSG free?

I'll go only if they'll burn Gwynyth at the stake.

For what it's worth, while the new single does seem to be downloadable (but this server is getting hammered really badly right now so I can't imagine the download speed is any good), I don't think ticketing information about the free show is actually posted yet. When I looked at the website yesterday, it said that the single would be available for download now but it didn't actually say anything about the show information - is it possible that Gothamist might have confused the two?

Is he having a laugh?

Yeah, can we get an update please? :)

I am REALLY disappointed with the fact that Gothamist would play a joke on Coldplay fans by saying the ticket info would be available at 7:15am this morning. I have a sister with Downs and her favorite band is Coldplay. Thus I got up super early (for me; I work late shifts) thinking I'd be able to get tickets, or at least try. But I guess the joke was on me. Thanks Gothamist. I can't believe I had to register to air my grievances.
