Last Night's Action: A Bad Ending
- Washington 10 Mets 5: It seemed like it would be a good night for the Mets. Halfway through the game, the Mets had a 3-0 lead and Oliver Perez was cruising. Unfortunately, they play nine innings in baseball and the Nationals took advantage of the latter ones. Perez gave up three runs in the fifth, but he turned a first and second no-out jam into a first and second two-out situation in the sixth before leaving the game.
And it was that call to the bullpen that was the Mets’ undoing. Willie Randolph went to Aaron Heilman who walked the bases loaded and gave up a grand slam to Felipe Lopez. The Nationals added three more runs in the seventh off of Jorge Sosa. The Mets mounted a rally in the ninth with Marlon Anderson homering and the first two runners reaching base, but they could not get the tying run out of the on-deck circle.
- White Sox 7 Yankees 6 : Phil Hughes looked good for two innings, but a rain delay of almost an hour forced the Yankees to remove him from the game. The Yankees had a 3-0 lead at the time which Russ Ohlendorf promptly gave up in a five-run bottom of the 4th. But, the Yankees rallied from down 6-3 to tie the game only to see Joe Crede single home the winning run off of Joba Chamberlain in the bottom of the ninth.
