Mariah Carey Lights Up the Empire State Building

2008_04_mariahesb.jpgOn Tuesday, the Empire State Building was green for Earth Day. On May 5, it'll be yellow for Project Sunshine, a non-profit that offers free social, educational and recreational programs for children with medical challenges. But tomorrow, the Empire State Building will be purple, pink and white in honor of Mariah Carey.

According to the ESB's website, it's "Honoring a Great New Yorker: Mariah Carey Breaks Records With E=MC2 Album Release."

Yes, Carey's latest album is number one on the charts. "E=MC2" sold 463,000 copies and is her sixth number one album. And Carey's not resting on her laurels, not only will the building be swathed in Mariah Carey-approved colors, she'll be performing in Times Square tomorrow morning for Good Morning America (fans should arrive by 6 a.m.) and she'll be at the ESB tomorrow at 1 p.m.!

[Via Boinkology, who recommends celebrating Mariah's efforts by watching the video for Fantasy because it's "Very relationshipy, and it’s got motherfuckin’ clowns.”]

    Everone loves a comeback story

That depends a lot on the comeback story, and this is one I don't love. She's too sickly sweet for my taste, and if I never hear "All I want for Christmas" again, it'll be too soon.

  • sonyactivision

She doesn't really even exist: "Mariah Carey" is really just a tape player wrapped up in taped cardboard with $1,000,000 worth of L'oreal smeared all over it.

....the wig is a dead giveaway.

  • chuzzlewit

actually doesn't look bad. i was going to make a joke involving one of the bratz, a my pretty pony, and a glowing dildo, but now after looking out the window i can't.

watching that looney lipsynch at 6 am is plain masochism though.

  • theevilone

They should sheath the ESB into an ill-fitting tube dress to honor her.

What's not to like? Beautiful, awesome voice, and relatively non-controversial. Everone loves a comeback story. Although she can do without the yo-yo dieting ala Oprah.

    Isn't she from the Guyland?

Still, I like Mariah. And sorry she never called you back, Ping.

  • zodak

yeah, Dude69, a lot of haters here.

she's had a great comeback after glitter & her nervous breakdown.

Hmm probably not the optimum time for this Londonista to decide to visit the Empire State Building then... maybe later...

  • anonymous

Based on what I saw during her performance on SNL, if her album is #1 it just further proves to me that with a big enough marketing push a turd could have a #1 album.

  • Dude69

#4 Don't know what the hell you're referring to, probably just jealous that she didn't go the way of Ms. Spears.

  • mocanlagunas

    what a whore...

    the ESB I mean....

Do we also get a stale tuna/ashtray scent pumped into the Times Square Area in honor of Miss (No)Thing? Condoms and high-test antibacterial handwash might also be in order for her "performance."

463,000 copies sold yet the RIAA complaining about sales?

  • Snoopy

    She has really nice fingers.

  • hlc

I believe she requires puppies and kittens where ever she goes. Hopefully they have them on hand for her to sing.
