Who knew that a stupid joke could turn into a $175,000 gift to a cancer research center? The Red Sox jersey buried in and then excavated from the under-construction new Yankee Stadium was sold for $175,100, via an eBay auction held by The Jimmy Fund, the fundraising arm of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
While the Yankees were unamused by a Yankee-hating construction worker's prank, the team decided to donate the shirt to The Jimmy Fund--Yankees President Randy Levine said, "We'll take the act that was a very, very bad act and turn it into something beautiful." And The Jimmy Fund's chairman--and former Red Sox second baseman--Mike Andrews agreed, "The Red Sox and Yankees are huge rivals on the field, but one thing they always do is unite in the fight against cancer. This is my 30th year with the Jimmy Fund, and there is no question this is the most unique fundraising opportunity we've had during that time."
The shirt is on view through mid-May at The Sports Museum, located inside TD Banknorth Garden, which is where the Boston Bruins and Celtics play. Per The Jimmy Fund website, "Local sports fans hope some of Big Papi's luck will rub off on both the Garden's teams, which are currently in the playoffs."

I like it how If you were an alien from another world and you asked someone to explain this it would be "OH this huge sports team is superstitious and they spent $50,000 dollars to dig this shirt up and it's basically garbage and they auctioned it off for $175,000.00. Yes, someone paid a lot of money for garbage. But it was for kids with cancer, you see? what's cancer you ask? it's this disease that nobody can cure but people keep giving money to the cause so they can feel better about themselves"
