The Daily News laments how, in spite of Mayor Bloomberg's promise to turn off lights in city buildings to conserve energy, many buildings are still glowing at all hours--even on Earth Day!
The most egregious example is the Bronx Hall of Justice, where one maintenance worker said it "looks like Christmas." The Daily News also found a school, a Board of Education building and 1 Police Plaza aglow late at night.
A mayoral spokesman explained, "The 300,000 people charged with running this city don't work 9 to 5. It is a 24-hour-a-day job. The lights don't go completely dark at City Hall and 1 Police Plaza because committed city employees are working around the clock to serve the people of New York." Hear that, residents? It's our fault!
The city did distribute a memo asking the last employee to leave to turn off lights, but it's unclear how that's being enforced. And here are some tips for energy efficiency from the city and Con Ed.

I think its a bit naive to think we could turn off all the lights in the city. It IS a 24-hour job.

motion sensing lights would never work. Have you ever actually seen a city employee on the job actually move?
Okay, so that's a few buildings. But most non-governmental office buildings aren't being used through the night, right? Is there something we can do about their lights?
Yeah, I live in a highrise and the office buildings visible from my apartment are lit up like a forest fire every single night, including on holidays. My favorite is the post office, which usually has about 3/4 of its windows lit at night. Yeah, I'm real sure the post office has that many people working in the middle of the night.
Motion sensing lights don't work very well and everyone hates them. Including me. I don't like having to get up and walk around to convince the motion sensor I'm really there.
