First Lady Launches "First Bloom" in Battery Park

2008_04_bushl.jpg

First Lady Laura Bush was in Battery Park yesterday to help the National Park Foundation launch First Bloom, a program to encourage children in urban centers to learn about the environment and what they can do for their parks and neighborhoods.

First Lady planted some flowers and other plants with members of the Boys Club of New York and the Lower East Side Girls Club. She said, "When people think of New York City, national parks probably are not the first thing that comes to mind. But in fact there are 10 national parks in New York City and northern New Jersey." (And Battery Park's Castle Clinton is a national monument.) As Lady Bird Johnson said, "The environment is where we all meet; where all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share. It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can become."

Besides NYC, First Bloom is being piloted in Austin, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. And the First Lady and her daughter Jenna are in town to promote their children's book, Read All About It!--Laura Bush is even co-hosting the third hour of the Today Show! (She and Jenna were just interviewed by Ann Curry--it was painful!).

Mrs. Bush is going to have to plant quite a few more petunias in order to compensate for the willful sale destruction of our national park lands by her husband.

I agree with Atomische, If anything planting flowers does more damage to the environment because of all the oil needed to produce the plastic bins, transport the flowers, topsoil, etc. to the park where you are planting these things.

How about planting something people can eat?

Just another photo op performance.

if you buried laura bush in battery park with an acorn in her mouth, someday there might be a stately oak there

"if you buried laura bush in battery park with an acorn in her mouth, someday there might be a stately oak there"

Yes, but then Battery Park would be "cursed"...

true. would we get a stately oak if we buried her in Baghdad?

them posies would grow a lot better if bush(sic) planted a dead terrrrrorist with each one

Perhaps if Laura Bush had been educated about the environment, as a child, she wouldn't be trying to destroy it now. But she and her friends need the oil and war money so badly.

Why was this kept a secret?! What a great opportunity it would have been to protest Bush's environmental destruction.

Mini-scoop: Around 6:00 PM Monday I saw Laura on Carmine St in the Village. Two SUVs, NYPD, Secret Service armed to the teeth, the whole bit. Just where I was walking they pulled over (yipes!), Laura came out of the lead SUV and headed into Market Table (54 Carmine). (I'd have stuck around for more details but I was late for dinner myself.)

All these public figures talk about being green, while they're in a limo getting about 10 miles to the gallon.
