Saved: Cheyenne Diner Will Move to Red Hook

Beloved Chelsea standby, the Cheynne Diner, closed two weeks ago so the site's owner could begin work on a 9-story building that will bring in rental income. But now, regulars can look forward to visiting the diner across the East River in Red Hook!

AMNY's Urbanite spoke to preservationist Michael Perlman, who said, "I am elated to report that a contract has been signed between George Papas and its new owner, Mike O'Connell. It will gain a new lease on life in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and contribute to the appeal of an up & coming neighborhood"

Perlman, who helped orchestrate the Moondance Diner's move to Wyoming last year, said he would help the two parties with all the permits needed to move the structure (that's how the Moondance left town). Papas said, "I'm really, really happy the Cheyenne's not being demolished, and will stay in NY."

Aw, that's great! We hope it works out, though some might say Red Hook is in the throes of de-gentrification.

Considering how bad the Moondance looked after it left town, I wouldn't be surprised if the parts of the Cheyenne looked beat to hell if/when they're reassembled in Red Hook.

    up and going

That's great to hear... It might not be Manhattan but at least it's staying in the five boroughs.

Many thanks are in order to Mr. Perlman and Mr. O’Connell. I don't suppose there's any indication as to whether Spiros Kasimis will be going with the diner. Presumably not, given the commute he'd have to make.

I hear there's a lot of bus service to/from Red Hook, but I just can't bring myself to figure it out. I just walk from Smith/9th and hope for no rain.

Red Hook is easy to get to from Downtown Brooklyn. Just take mass transit.

Yeah, mass transit includes the bus, numbnuts.

It may do well in Red Hook with Ikea opening in two months. Or it may just flop. If they could just extend the G train into Red Hook, it would be much easier to access. Or not.

  • zodak

i'm sure some nimby losers in red hook will complain about this.

#9 Now you're going to have two places to get your explosive diarrhea on.

  • blablanyc

In Red Hook, it can then close in obscurity.

As I sit here eating expired bodega triscuits and overly soured cream, my tummy flips massive to the news. We can use a new diner here in red hook.

As local lore (and experience) goes: get explosive diarrhea once from the Hope and Anchor once, shame on them; get explosive diarrhea from the Hope and Anchor TWICE, shame on me.

    At least it's saved.

    Great information. I'll keep it!

  • Toby von Meistersinger

This is good news. Now if they could only make Red Hook easier to get to, say a light rail line from Downtown or something.

  • chuzzlewit

they should put a mast and sail on it and cruise it over

  • babyhitler

Stop trying to make Red Hook happen! It's never going to happen. Thanks to the gowanus expressway.

  • WhereAmI

Has anyone ever found Red Hook to be convenient? Way in the ass middle of nowhere.

  • Larry

Yet another reason not to ever go to Red Hook.

  • Pharmer

Cool. Somehow Red Hook sounds more fitting for the diner.
