BREAKING: HAZMAT Team at Park Slope Residence, One Person Dead

042108hazmat2parkslope.JPGPhoto courtesy Gothamist reader Heather D.

One Park Slope resident emailed us to describe a surprising scene unfolding this morning on 4th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues.

I went out for my coffee around 10am and there were 4 white undercover SUVs, an NYPD emergency truck and a large, black DEP/HAZMAT truck/mobile unit parked on my street! When I came back from my coffee run I saw a Fire Dept. SUV parked at the 6th Ave end of the block and a car from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner… A moment ago I saw a few passersby noticing the high volume of vehicles and they pulled out phones and cameras. Someone in the Medical examiner's car honked the horn and shouted out "no pictures." I asked the people from the ME's car what was going on, but they said they couldn't say anything and that I should call the 78th Precinct for more info…There's also an ambulance now.
The 78th Precinct tell us: "An unidentified liquid has been removed from a residence. Nothing to be worried about." The officer declined to elaborate further, and the street is currently blocked off.

UPDATE: According to the NYPD, the incident in Park Slope this morning involved one fatality: 65-year-old Robert Siegel, whose body was found by his wife. The DEP tested the toxic liquid and determined the substance to be cyanide. Police say they do not suspect criminality at this time.

moonshine?

Meth lab?

probably a barrel of "Pikes Peak"

Hazmat investigating 'unidentified liquid' in Park Slope, of all places.

Its obviously LSD

Someone in the Medical examiner's car honked the horn and shouted out "no pictures."

Just so you know as long as you are on public property, No one can tell you not to take pictures. You're next picture should be of the person saying 'no pictures'.

28 years of used tampons

good point funstraw! police state and imaginary rules made up by people with huge egos.

Irradiated baby formula.

Just so you know as long as you are on public property, No one can tell you not to take pictures. You're next picture should be of the person saying 'no pictures'.

Yeah, have fun arguing that while you spend 24 hours in lockup, just cause Office McRooney feels like it.

yes risk of arrest is there,
idiot cops who think somehow they are fighting terrorism!

i was once arrested for filings a civilian complaint at the precint against the cop who tossed me down a flight of stairs and then begged the landlord to approve an arrest for damaging the sheetrock where i landed.

hey 108th precint in queens, i hope someone shoots a cop from that precint every day forever.

semen

I live directly across the street. The medical examiner has removed one body. The whole scene is still the same as of 2pm

i frown on that damn chalk girl's shenanigans.

chalk girl use to live in my building which is actually on third street right behind this story.

In case I wasn't clear, the med. examiner removed a corpse. I'm more than a little creeped out as I watch this unfold through my windows.

I thought I smelled something afoul as I walked by Saturday morning.

Cyanide smells like almonds. If you have good senses, you can taste/smell it if you eat an apple's seeds, which have abit of the same compounds. It's a little flirt with death for the healthy set.

Robert Siegel of NPR is dead?

With all things considered this could have been a lot worst...

Cyanide? Hmm wasn't that the preferred chemical of choice for the serial killer RICHARD 'ICEMAN' KUKLINSKI?"

Where was Renee Montagne this morning?

Wonder what the stroller moms are thinking.

mmmm.cyanide!

"hey 108th precint in queens, i hope someone shoots a cop from that precint every day forever."

Yeah, call some cRap artists the next time you get robbed.

your welcome to become the victim of police bruality and false arrest anytime then decide for yourself, lets say we have another reginald denny / rodney king thing going on, thousands of rioters in the streets because 4 pigs were forgiven for shooting an unarmed man, i certainly know that the cops will be out protecting city hall and macys instead of running to rescue your 8 year old as she is being raped. thats a fact, good luck there...

you live in a fanatsy world were you actually believe police really protect people, heres an example in todays news

Zero tolerance is in effect everywhere in New York - except at the City Council

"But a 25-year-old construction worker fails to keep himself parked in one seat when he dozes off aboard a nearly empty subway car, and look out!

Shon Frazier awoke to be handcuffed and hauled off an uptown A train at 34th St. He was held for more than 12 hours before being brought into Manhattan Criminal Court on Monday afternoon.

"Defendant is charged with occupying multiple seats in a transit facility," the court officer announced. "

If you pay multiple fare would it be OK to occupy multiple seats? I would advise all officers of the law to demand payment on the spot. They can carry little scanners with them and scan your metrocard at the time of the offense. Therefore easing the congestion in our courts. Money made, time saved.

Tthere are approx 30,000 cops in NYC. They arent all angels, what a surprise.

Anytime you want to do a comparison of stats of crimes committed by cops vs civilians let us know.

And have fun turning NYC into Detroit.
