FDNY is Investigating Fatal Queens Crash

2008_04_fdnycar.jpgAfter a 26-year-old woman died when her car crashed into a fire truck responding to a call yesterday morning, her mother, a pastor at a Queens church, said, "God has called my angel home. He has called my best friend."

Angela Johnson had been at the intersection at 111th Avenue and 155th Street in Jamaica Queens when a fire truck from Engine 275 was headed to respond to a hose fire on 109th Avenue. The fire truck's sirens were blaring, but apparently Johnson still went into the intersection. A witness said the truck did slow, but Johnson's car "kept going."

The driver's side of her Nissan Maxima was hit and the car was "pushed 100 feet up the block." Johnson was pronounced dead at the hospital and all firefighters aboard suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Her mother said her daughter, who had been recently engaged and was attending Plaza Business Institute, was on her way to a doctor's appointment.

The FDNY says it will investigate the crash (the Post notes the FDNY has invested millions in "accident-prevention training"). The intersection, which only has a four-way stop sign, is considered treacherous to residents, one told the Daily News, "We've been asking for a [traffic] light here for a long, long time."
