Earlier in the week, unconfirmed reports of a knife-wielding assailant had Williamsburg residents on edge; South Williamsburg in particular has been flooded with patrolmen all week, and we’ve heard from readers who say they’ve been written summons for minor offenses like jaywalking.
Though the 90th Precinct and the NYPD press liaison are unforthcoming about the dragnet, two officers walking their beat by the future Pies ‘n’ Thighs location on Driggs and South 4th Street told us the increased police presence was in response to a spate of machete-wielding gang violence. Again with the machetes, New York? Any more incidents like this and we may as well add a machete to the city’s seal, and lose "Sinister the Indian's" bow. The officers also said there has been a steady rise in gang activity in Williamsburg in the past few months.
And the trusty Brooklyn Paper police blotter, which is never a good source for peace of mind, reports that muggers have indeed been feeling kind of stabby this month, though no machetes were sighted.
- A woman was mugged at knife point outside her North 1st Street apartment, between Wythe and Berry, on April 11th.
- Also on the 11th, a woman returning home to her apartment on Harrison Place, between Bogart Street and Morgan Avenue, found a mugger waiting for her on the stoop. He followed her in and brandished a blade to persuade her to part with her jewelery, which included a $755 necklace.
- At 1:30 a.m. on the 12th, a 21-year-old man was punched in the face and stabbed in the hand by two muggers on Scholes Street, who made off with $20.

I live on Rodney btw. S. 4th and S. 5th. I've spoken to two different sets of cops about what's up with the increased police presence. One group said that they were just out in force as a precaution "because summer's coming," and, as we all know, the Southside be wildin' in the warm months. The other said was more forthcoming: They said that there had been "a few more robberies" lately around Southside, and that their unit had been pulled up from Bed-Stuy to get things on lock-down. But, the cop said, "things'll start going crazy in Bed-Stuy now, and they'll need us back down there."
Its terrible but true that these are becoming more common. I myself have been mugged, thankfully no knife involved. But the cops are only on the beat till about 8-9, then they are gone. Not helpful!
Oh good. If it's one thing that we need, it's to take cops away from Bed-Stuy and into Williamsburg. If Bed-Stuy gets too safe, it might gentrify, and force the cops to be spread even thinner.
Ugh, "The Edge"... even worse than being stabbed or hammered in a bodega.
Why would a white person move to "Rodney street"?
I was never mugged while living in Bed-Stuy, even when I walked around early the morning. Panhandled a few times and I gave money up since I thought it was the smart, if not charitable, thing to do...
I was mugged in Astoria a few years ago, tho'.
For heaven's sake. It's not surprising to hear this news. The people moving into these neghborhoods are pissing off the low-income individuals who will eventually be forced out of their own apartments. You know it, I know it. So for the muggers, it's party time. Get the "rich" folk. "But it's not fair!" everyone will say. Well too bad.
Those cops are loving Wburg. All I've seen them doing is hanging out near Brooklyn Natural and checking out hipster chicks. Last night they were just chilling in the subway stairs with like 3 of their boys talking shit. I felt MUCH safer.
"The officers also said there has been a steady rise in gang activity in Williamsburg in the past few months."
I love living in a "Sanctuary City"- thanks Rudy and Nanny B!
it's only gonna get worse,
wait, I say that every summer and nothing remotely like a riot happens.
That photo is of a mural by Doze Green that was done at the 11 Spring Street project. You should credit both the artist and the photographer.

This kind of bullshit "love the criminal -- he can't help it, it's his right to be one!" REALLY pisses me off. And what an unbelievably clueless, patronizing INSULT to honest, working-class people who DON'T feel entitled to terrorize those who have more.
Pathetic.
