Last Night's Action: Marty...Marty...Marty
- Rangers 5 Devils 3: There is justice in the hockey world. One game after inadvertently deflecting the winning goal for the Devils off of his skate, Marc Staal scored the winning goal for the Rangers. Staal’s slap shot beat Martin Brodeur through the five-hole with three minutes left in regulation of a 3-3 game and gave the MSG crowd another chance to serenade Brodeur.
Staal’s goal was one of the many highlights for the Rangers, who played a superior game to New Jersey except for a stretch in the third period. Chris Drury had a very good game, getting big wins off the draw and adding a goal and an assist. Gomez had two goals, including a very creative empty-netter to clinch the win. Patrik Elias had two goals for New Jersey and a very big uncalled slash that setup the third Devils goal. New Jersey will head home and try and fight off elimination on Friday.
- Mets 5 Washington 2: The Mets got two solo home runs from Ryan Church and Jose Reyes while Carlos Beltran broke things open with a three-run shot. John Maine pitched 6-2/3 innings for the win with Billy Wagner pitching a perfect ninth for his second save.
- Yankees 15 Red Sox 9: Chien-Ming Wang didn’t have it, losing leads of 3-1 and 7-3, but the Red Sox couldn’t hold onto a 9-7 lead. Chad Moeller had three hits and a very important slide and Jorge Posada added 3 RBI’s, including a big hit in the 8th.
- Indiana 132 Knicks 123: With any luck this will be the last time we ever have to see Isiah Thomas as part of the Knicks. But, Isiah has survived this long, so don't expect him to completely disappear from the organization. Expect an announcement on Isiah's fate in the next few days.
- Boston 105 Nets 94: Richard Jefferson had 18 points as the Nets could not overcome a Boston team that rested their starters most of the game.

Let's do this, Rangers. The Devils are not going to be able to win three games in a row, so the sooner you can finish the job and prepare for the next opponent, probably Pittsburgh, the better.
Intense game last night, nice writeup of the highlights, Pete. The blueshirts did look sluggish in the opening of the third period compared to the Devils, but they managed to spring back well.
Anybody see the Aids commercial with the gay dude during the Rangers game? I'm sure hockey fans enjoyed that.

The Devils have come back from 3-1 before.. but of course that was not the same team.
The uncalled slash on Lundqvist was by Parise, not Elias.
This series isn't over yet. 10-2 record against Jersey this year or no, the games have all been close and putting them away won't be a cakewalk.
It was Parise who hit the stick out of Lundqvist's hands. While I am a die-hard Rangers fan, however, even I would not call it a slashing penalty.
Per NHL Rule 85:
Slashing is the act of swinging a player's stick at an opponent, whether contact is made or not.
(NOTE ) Non aggressive stick contact to the pant or front of the shin pads, should not be penalized as slashing.
1. A minor or major and a game misconduct penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, shall be imposed on any player who impedes the progress of an opponent by "slashing" with his stick.
2. A major and a game misconduct penalty or a match penalty shall be imposed on any player who injures an opponent by slashing.
It did not appear that Parise was swinging at Lundqvist, but rather that he was swinging down at the goalie's stick. So the non-call was probably correct.
Hold your stick tighter, Henrik, or put a leash on that thing.
