- Mets 6 Washington 0: It was a great day and night at Shea. During the day, Rachel Robinson, Jackie’s widow, toured the Jackie Robinson Rotunda at Citi Field and described it as “walking into a cathedral in a way.” She also addressed the crowd before the game tonight and every player from both teams wore #42 in tribute.
The Mets have that among other things to look forward to when they leave Shea at the end of the year, but they also have high expectations for 2008. Tuesday they got back on track with great pitching from Mike Pelfrey and the return of Duaner Sanchez. David Wright was the offensive star with a home run in the first as part of his 5 RBI night. Lastings Milledge was soundly booed in his return and Jose Reyes played for the first time in three games.
- Yankees 5 Tampa 3: Meanwhile over in Tampa the last man who will ever wear Jackie’s #42 recorded his 5th save of the season. Rivera’s effort was the capper of a strong pitching night from the Yanks with Andy Pettitte pitching seven solid innings and Kyle Farnsworth (seriously, it was him) pitching a 1-2-3 eighth. Hideki Matsui had a home run and 2 RBI’s while Derek Jeter went 3-for-4 with a RBI.
- Nets 112 Charlotte 108 (OT): New Jersey gave up a five-point lead in the final two minutes of regulation before sending the final home crowd of the year away happy with the win in overtime. Richard Jefferson led the Nets with 28 points.

Yes, that's NY Gov and philanthropist David Paterson on the mound.

I don't get it... How does a blind man pitch?
Mr. Magoo is very talented.
is he even facing the catcher??
The Yankees should have Larry Doby day - Larry was the first Black player in the American league and also grew up in New Jersey. Everyone forgets about him! It's so sad.
He's already had his Dukakis moment before he has even started running for higher office..
It's a good thing the Mets got rid of Lo Duca. Can you imagine "Captain Red Ass" being on the other end of the Gov's pitch? "Hey, I'm over here, you blind bastard!"
Guv Patterson's half-inning on WFAN made even listening to Howie Rose tolerable. The Guv gets extra points for being a knowledgeable baseball fan.
Black manager. Black Governor throwing out the first pitch. I wish Mr. Robinson was still here to enjoy this.
Larry Doby played for the Cleveland Indians and they had a day of events last year celebrating the 50th anniversary of him becoming the first African-American player. Major League Baseball also marked the occasion with events and tributes at its games. I met Doby years ago and I had a wonderful conversation with him. Very nice man and a very good ballplayer.
The Mets have appropriated Jackie Robinson's legacy because they're the National League team based in New York. It makes sense to an extent (the Mets colors are, after all, based on those of the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants), but Robinson was a Dodger and that organization deserves credit for part of his legacy.
