Manhattanville Shooting: Two Injured, Shooter Kills Himself

2008_04_amstshooting.jpgThis morning around 6:15 a.m., two people were shot outside the Manhattanville Houses at 1430 Amsterdam Avenue before the gunman shot himself. Now it turns out the shooter was a postal carrier who had gotten into a fight with the men.

NY1 reports that 48-year-old Roberto Caballero "had a confrontation with two men," and shot one man three times in the chest and the other once in the head. Then Caballero went to his apartment and killed himself. The U.S. Postal Service called him a "model employee."

It's unclear what prompted the confrontation. The victims are both in critical condition; the sister of one told NY1, "All I can tell you is that he's a wanted parole felon. He's wanted and he should be arrested. I called the police on him for them to come pick him up."

HarlemG4Life is correct. Roberto was a great guy that loved his family and kept to himself.I was his neighbor for many years, his mother watched me sometimes when my parents went out. It's really sad that people you live with all your life have no regard or respect for your life or theirs. Now his family will suffer with this tragedy for ever & those bums will probably go right back to acosting their neighbors in the lobby!!

My prayers also go out to the family!

    Rest In Peace Roberto!!

This was a great guy. No carzy postal employee. The unfortunate part is the fact that his family has lived there for over 30 years. This family was one of the first hispanic imigrants. Please pray vs. spreading harsh words. Think about it...your mother being acosted by criminals. Hard working people being victims of their own neighborhood. We all need to come together and rid our neighborhoods of crime, drugs and illiteracy. Education and opportunity = great communities!

Roberto was a great guy! My prays to the family!

to Camarilla, you selfish girl - how dare you suggest that public housing be torn down so that you don't have to support "felons" in "your" front yard. Ever thought of walking a mile in the shoes of those who endure life in NYCHA projects? Ever given a damn about the correlation between racism and poverty and crime? Why don't you move back to the Upper East side? Criminals there are more sophisticated: they use meat cleavers in therapists' offices.

I thought Barbara Corcoran eliminated crime from Harlem?

You have to preface "model person" , when referring to postal workers.. Maybe he "went postal"?

I'm so so glad that the Manhattanville houses are in my front yard (literally-the entrance to my building is right across the street from them). I'm even more glad that part of my hard earned tax money goes to support felons living nearby (one of the victims is wanted, let alone the instability of the shooter). Can we please raze these things yet?

"And Columbia wants to expand into this quiet neighborhood?"

That's what all the protest is about. Residence want to keep their deep rooted culture alive. More murder! More depravity! YAY!

Priceless description of the "model employee".

Most of the people at the Post Office seem pretty weird, too. Like they really don't want you to be there.

  • Snoopy

He went "postal" on them. Too bad there aren't other law abiding citizens that will step up and try to rid the world of scum.

And Columbia wants to expand into this quiet neighborhood?

  • Reality Czech

This world would be a better place if all shooters killed themselves.
