"Pain Ray" Humvees on Flatbush

Reader Daniel pointed our attention to this photograph of a military trailer, carrying Humvees and headed towards Manhattan on Flatbush. He noticed that the center one was "outfitted with the so-called non-lethal Active Denial System."

What's the Active Denial System, you ask? Here's how the AP described ADS in 2007: "The military calls its new weapon an 'active denial system,' but that's an understatement. It's a ray gun that shoots a beam that makes people feel as if they are about to catch fire."

As for why the Humvees were in the city, maybe they were shipped to the Red Hook Container Terminal and will be used to...help protect the Pope!

Re: Jerky's comment, and a few others

I got a confirmation from the Marines that, yup, it's an ADS Humvee being delivered from a Raytheon factory on Long Island. No information on where it was headed, however.

    Burn 'em!

Actually if Christ and all the fucks that died in his name got together and staged a big fart-in and fuck them gig, the world would be a better place. Yes? No?

  • Jerky

That's a different dish than the ADS, plus the ADS is not going into production until 2010. It most likely a communication satellite dish, or some sort of radar support for a missile system or surveillance.

Then Jesus made the Popemobile? He IS all-powerful!

  • Polite New Yorker

You would think the Vicar of Christ wouldn't need a man-made ray gun to protect him. Couldn't Jesus do it for free?

  • ihateallbrokers

i think they are already pointing their

top-secret gay-ray on nyc at this moment...

    just a hunch,

pardon me while i teabag this protester

  • The Edge

    It's like Transmetropolitan!

  • ThisCharmingMan

Imagine if they had ADS during the civil rights movement, or the 60's...

Protest has already been neutered. They will force people to become violent, and to take up arms.

  • Politburo

The military outsources a large amount of work.. but you bring up a good point. The assertion that this particular vehicle has the ADS only comes from a flickr caption. No supporting information is given. It doesn't seem to match the picture of an ADS-equipped Humvee that is on Wikipedia (via DOD).

  • Snoopy

That is not a military trailer. Military trailers do not have chrome wheels.

  • Snoopy

Do they make a pocket version of ADS?

Are you sure it's an ADS or is it just a giant satellite dish to bring in reruns of "Baywatch?"

  • Politburo

Ph: No, not really. There is a weapon in the book, but it's more like a huge bomb than a shit-your-pants ray.

I think any work of fiction had some passing reference to an "atomic beam cannon ray gun blaster."

  • Jen S

I'd love to get my hands on a pooping gun. The possibilities!

  • babyhitler

The military has a gun that also makes you take a huge shit right there and then. I wonder why they never use it on protestors? I'd pay to see a whole group of angry people all of a sudden needing to pop a squat.
