"Why shouldn't they work?"

In my building they used to work until workers complained that people in the lobby kept pressing the close buttons too fast so no one else could get on, causing backups in the lobby area. Theres always some people who spoil it for the rest of us.

What is it with those "close door" buttons, anyway? Why shouldn't they work?

Two thoughts - read "The Intuitionist," a fantasy noir about elevator inspectors, epistemology, and race, by Colson Whitehead. A little dry but very clever.

AND, what was that trick some people found a few years ago that can fool elevators into skipping stops? Some combination of buttons. I believe it was in the Times.
