Construction Worker Killed at East 67th Condo Site

2008_04_e66.jpgA construction worker at an East 67th Street condominium construction site fell to his death this morning. The worker had been installing windows at the 23rd floor, and he fell onto a 14th floor balcony.

Buildings Department Commissioner Patricia Lancaster issued a statement saying, "It appears the nylon safety strap connecting the worker to the building failed. As part of our investigation, our team is now auditing the method the crews used to install the safety straps throughout the building."

However, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer is upset, because the site for upscale condo The Laurel has 38 violations, "including 36 "Grade A" violations, which are the most hazardous." See the Buildings Dept.'s info on the site at 400 East 67th Street.

Last month, a construction crane collapsed on East 51st Street, apparently because a nylon strap broke.

greed kills. again. very sad.

greed broke the dudes nylon strap?

They saved money buying cheap nylon straps to help pay for the marble bathrooms.

How exactly is greed to blame for the untimely death of this fellow?

A more relevant concern is that the safety equipment--the harness and shock-absorbing lanyard connected to the safety strap embedded in the concrete slab of the floor above--that's supposed to prevent tragedies like this failed with such disastrous results.

you really really really needed to park between 67th & 68th street on the east side of the street and take 2 busstops and the no standing zone in front of a busy hospital

the ability to deliver news is that important so you can inconvenience those who need access to buses and hospital picks&drop offs

another rush job pays the price.
all greed kills.

Man, is anything actually happening after all these accidents? Nice of Scott Stringer to take the opportunity to talk tough on construction companies in front of the media, but is he actually doing anything about it? I mean, I remember when the crane fell on 51st St. he said he had the construction company in his office that week for violations. So what the hell was the site doing still open if it was so bad they were in his office?

Rough being in construction right now - I guess NYC is still building unlike the rest of the country - not sure if it's a good thing given all the accidents lately.

amazing, American Airlines can shut down operations for safety inspections but the DOB can't do it on a job with 36 safety violations.
Where's the mayor?
