For a few years, horse-drawn carriages were limited to staying withing Central park only. When they were allowed on the streets again, it became clear that was a bad idea -- the city has more traffic than ever before. It is an inhumane business, akin to animal enslavement. Horse racing should be banned as well! My only hope is that they also add some kind of proviso to the ban that would insure a safe retirement for these carriage horses, who deserve some time to live breathing fresh air, run on grass, and be with other horses in a natural setting. Horses need other horses. I'd hate to see the ban aenacted only to find out that the owners abandoned or euthanized them.

The horse drawn carriage industry is corrupt and inhumane. They have 2 police officers employed as part time drivers. They have Lobbyists and PR Daly to influence officials to permit this travesty to continue. Everyone knows it is unethical and unsafe to have horses in NYC traffic. These horses are bound to those carriages for hours and double shifted and put in warehouses. Why do you think they cover the windows in the warehouses so no one see the cruelty. Recently a eight year old horse was found dead in clinton warehouse. If you have any heart then take a second and go to NYC.gov for your council member and demand them to support into 658 to ban this inhumane industry. Call Quinn and ask her to support it or you will support her resignation for the slush funds. Please pity those poor horses. I do agree that the horse drawn carriages should be eliminated. I am not so sure about the Model T idea. Pedicabs are a better idea.

Here is the full article: Two people are recovering after a horse-drawn carriage accident in downtown Cincinnati Saturday night. Police said the horse tossed its driver and dragged the carriage on its side for about two blocks before police could stop it. Both the driver and a passenger were taken to the hospital with injuries.

This is the 21st century! Animals pulling carriages don't belong in a major city. Why do you think Paris, Toronto, London and Beijing, as well as other cities have gotten rid of this ancient vehicle? Yet another horse-drawn carriage accident occured yesterday--this time in Cincinnati. In January six people were injured in Charlotte, South Carolina. Associated Press - April 13, 2008 4:25 PM ET The driver was taken to a hospital with a back injury. 1 of the passengers had a head injury but it was not life-threatening. The accident happened last night.>>

Replacing the horse carriage tourist in and about Central park has been discussed for the last 65 years, They will stay another 60 years as well. I myself witnessed a taxi killing a horse in 1947 at 72nd street as a child ,outcry then but no action. So vatelseisnew?.

The Indians are doing away with the rickshaw. It would be a nice, if quaint, idea to bring them to New York. The pedicabs and rickshaws operators can form their own unions. And except for the fact that humans piss, shit, and exhale carbon dioxide--it would be "green".
