Putting the Car Before the Horse

horseandcar.jpgA plan is afoot to have horse drawn carriages around Central Park replaced by environmentally friendly classic cars, like the Ford Model T. The carriage horse business has come under increasing scrutiny recently as an outdated and cruel practice. Several incidents where horses were killed or injured after bolting in city traffic have galvanized opponents and some politicians to ban the use of horses in New York City. Technology remains a barrier, according to the Post.

One option would be the classic replicas that run on propane and hydrogen currently shuttling tourists around San Francisco. But Nislick said the coalition would prefer electric cars with zero emissions - technology that may not be available until 2010.
Councilman Tony Avella is interested in the possible substitution of cars for horses. He's already proposed a bill to ban horse drawn carriages in the city. Carriage owners insist that their animals are well cared for and think that a car ride won't have the same appeal as a carriage ride. Spokeswoman for the Horse and Carriage Association, Carolyn Daly, told the Post "No one wants to replace clip-clop, clip-clop with chitty chitty bang bang."

That is an awesome idea! :)

The Indians are doing away with the rickshaw. It would be a nice, if quaint, idea to bring them to New York. The pedicabs and rickshaws operators can form their own unions. And except for the fact that humans piss, shit, and exhale carbon dioxide--it would be "green".

Replacing the horse carriage tourist in and about Central park has been discussed for the last 65
years, They will stay another 60 years as well.
I myself witnessed a taxi killing a horse in 1947
at 72nd street as a child ,outcry then but no
action. So vatelseisnew?.

that is a stupid retarded idea

Electric Model T's hahahhaha thats too funy

They should just go to japan and have them make a robotic horse powered by giant nicads.

Or maybe they will ressurect the Seinfeld idea of having the Homeless powered Rickshaws...

Better yet let cons power the rickshaws and they get a day off their sentence for every thousand miles.

How about renting four-wheeled pedalcars to tourists instead? After all, they already rent out rowboats on the lake.

How about we replace them with nothing? I hear that even tourists have legs these days. Maybe someone could figure out how legs might be used to move our far asses around the park without killing horses or f*cking up the place for the rest of us.

Just sayin'.

This is a smart and humane idea that would be a good move for NYC in the 21st century. Be a leader, not a follower.

Animal activists are not dealing with a full deck...and this unbeliveably stupid idea is proof! I have a better idea: we should ban the animal activists from Central Park. This way they can no longer pollute the air with their verbal garbage.

This is the 21st century! Animals pulling carriages don't belong in a major city. Why do you think Paris, Toronto, London and Beijing, as well as other cities have gotten rid of this ancient vehicle?

Yet another horse-drawn carriage accident occured yesterday--this time in Cincinnati. In January six people were injured in Charlotte, South Carolina.

Associated Press - April 13, 2008 4:25 PM ET

The driver was taken to a hospital with a back injury. 1 of the passengers had a head injury but it was not life-threatening.

The accident happened last night.>>

Excellent idea! It would end the cruel business of making money off those poor horses' backs AND it would show the world that cars can be green! Come on people, show some open-mindedness!

Here is the full article:

Two people are recovering after a horse-drawn carriage accident in downtown Cincinnati Saturday night.

Police said the horse tossed its driver and dragged the carriage on its side for about two blocks before police could stop it.

Both the driver and a passenger were taken to the hospital with injuries.

I do agree that the horse drawn carriages should be eliminated. I am not so sure about the Model T idea. Pedicabs are a better idea.

The horse drawn carriage industry is corrupt and inhumane. They have 2 police officers employed as part time drivers. They have Lobbyists and PR Daly to influence officials to permit this travesty to continue. Everyone knows it is unethical and unsafe to have horses in NYC traffic. These horses are bound to those carriages for hours and double shifted and put in warehouses. Why do you think they cover the windows in the warehouses so no one see the cruelty. Recently a eight year old horse was found dead in clinton warehouse.
If you have any heart then take a second and go to NYC.gov for your council member and demand them to support into 658 to ban this inhumane industry. Call Quinn and ask her to support it or you will support her resignation for the slush funds. Please pity those poor horses. These owners and drivers don't want to disclose their identities because they are liars and abusers. My name is roxanne delgado and I cry for those horses

also do not buy the new York sun since it has publish puff pieces as editorials for this inhumane industry

The antique car idea is fantastic. Imagine how beautiful they will look in the park and on Central Park South. The smell of urine and the manure will be gone too.

For a few years, horse-drawn carriages were limited to staying withing Central park only. When they were allowed on the streets again, it became clear that was a bad idea -- the city has more traffic than ever before. It is an inhumane business, akin to animal enslavement. Horse racing should be banned as well!

My only hope is that they also add some kind of proviso to the ban that would insure a safe retirement for these carriage horses, who deserve some time to live breathing fresh air, run on grass, and be with other horses in a natural setting. Horses need other horses. I'd hate to see the ban aenacted only to find out that the owners abandoned or euthanized them.

Ban the animal activists! New York City will be so much safer without them.

dear Nunyah
there are several rescue groups that will help care for them and show them that humans can be kind
please contact the council and ask them to support intro 658 to ban this industry and end the cruelty

Ban Roxanne from NYC too! She has no life and is a complete and pathetic liar. Roxanne, your nose is growing.

Dido, thank you for demonstrating in your entries how a lack of compassion for animals extends to la ack of compassion for humans.

Roxanne, you are a true shining light speaking out for the animals. Keep it up!

Zeitgeist, you sound as dumb and ignorant as Roxanne. Are you two best friends or soulmates or something? It is animal crazies like you and Roxanne that have zero compassion for animals or people. Trust me readers, the animal activists of this city are sick, disturbed, creepy people who deserve each other. Everyone loves animals, respects them, and cares for them. I myself have several animals, including a horse. But these lonely, dysfunctional losers think they own the rights to animal compassion and welfare. They are wrong. Dead wrong.

Keep it up, Dido. The demonstration is working great. The vehemence and nastiness in your words is very revealing. Let's bring NY forward by getting rid of the cruel carriage horse industry, replacing it perhaps with the cool, environmentally friendly antique car proposal, and let's get Dido and others like her to a compassion workshop!

Hey Zeitgeist, I have a better idea...why don't you rent an old beat up car (like the one your Mother drives) and get the heck out of NYC as the horse carriages are here to stay and you leaving would make a great city even better! Bah-buy.

Zeitgeist and Roxanne, PETA called. Your membership to their terrorist organization is expiring and you need to renew your oath to despicable and nauseating behavior. Be sure to call 1-800-petakillsanimals.com.
