What's with the roommate hate? I lived by myself from 21-25 and don't intend to go back. I'm either living with friends or with a partner. I don't think people (well, by that, I mean me) do well living alone.

The never learning drive thing is only a born--or at least--raised in NYC phenomenon. For people moving here ... moot. And I don't know anyone in their 30s living with roommates. Nonsense. The rest is just dribble. This is all fantasy. Now it is true that New York will never be cheaper. But that is why young people are going to keep moving in. Strange logic, but true.

I really dont understand why people think everyone is going back to Ohio if the city falls back into a shithole. If the city is cheaper more and more young people are going to move here. People are moving to Ridgewood just to be in NYC. The cheaper the city gets the closer they will get to Manhattan. Hipsters filled up the lower east side during the 70's because it was cheap. You're either going to have more carrie bradshaw's or more hipsters. pick one.

#4- they have enough hereditary wealth to last 2 lifetimes. Rich people usually only have 1 or 2 kids or none at all. So those trustfund babies will survive any economic downturn. The only way they'd ever get any comeuppance is if we had a french revolution type thing where they eat the rich. That might happen one day though.

This city is set for decline. State and city government spending is oblivious to the bloodbath in the financial sector. The creative types effectively don't pay taxes. I hope the children of the wealthy took enough pictures during the second gilded age, because the Iceman Cometh.

An influx of people born in the 80s, raised in the 90s and now living in post-Ghouliani NYC sounds like a perfect scenario for all-out 24/7, surrealist, consumer-fueled zaniness. Don't worry though, when the fit hits the shan, these kids will be back on the bus to Ohio in no time.
