Red Sox-Yankee Rivalry Cemented at New Stadium?
Given that only time will tell, it may be a little premature to proclaim the new, currently under construction Yankee Stadium cursed. But the NY Post suggested just that, as two workers from the concrete crew claim a Red Sox fan buried a Sox shirt.
Two worried workers told the Post, with one explaining, "In August, a Red Sox T-shirt was poured in a slab in the visitor's clubhouse. It's the curse of the Yankees. Nobody knows about it. It's in the floors, it's buried," while another said, "I don't want to be responsible for sinking the franchise."
Co-owner of Red Sox bar Professor Thom's Chris Wertz thinks the locker room will be "torn up and relaid right away." Peter Nash, the author of a book about Red Sox fans, thinks there's actually a different curse, "The Yankees haven't won since [Alex Rodriguez] came to their game. There's probably more to that than a T-shirt."
The Yankees' thoughts? Spokesman Howard Rubenstein said, "It sounds like a tall tale, and it would take more than a Red Sox T-shirt to put a curse on the Yankees."

Of course, this could be a curse on the Red Sox as they're metaphysically dead and buried at Yankee Stadium...
it would take more than a Red Sox T-shirt to put a curse on the Yankees.
or...would it? (CUE DRAMATIC MUSIC)
I must say it can't be a curse. If the worker had come out 10 years from now and said it might be there and in that time the yanks sucked then it would be a curse.
As it is now we simply have a t-shirt in cement.
Now there is the legend of a Winger concert shirt buried in the coundation of the rock and roll hall of fame. Some blame that curse for the state of the recording industry and the rise of online music etc.
I took a huge dump in an undisclosed place in Fenway Park. FU Red Sux.
im a sox fan and i think this is a silly nonsense story
yeah. it's metaphorically wrong and stupid. The red sox were cursed because they sold babe ruth to the yankees for money. it was karmic. If the yankees buried the shirt themselves to get back at the Red sox then it would be a curse. the yankees have to be the protagonists for it to be a curse. I mean, what's the difference if a red sox fan puts a tshirt on a flag pole or the cement? nothing
What probably happened was that some moron with one of those "Got Rings?" t-shirts from the Bronx killed a Red Sox fan and buried him under the new stadium.
The Yankees are the evil empire. But the Sox don't need a buried T-shirt to kick the Yankees ass.
Shit, #7 is on to me.
Not true, I'm a Mets fan. We don't need t-shirts to curse our team.
Red Sox are the new Yankees: one of the highest payrolls in baseball, bandwagon fans and ridiculous prices at Fenway. In a sense, they are the evil empire now...
shame, shame on the NY based (union) workers who obviously allowed this to happen,
#10, you're right about the Sox, but the Yankees are still the Evil Empire. They still have the highest payroll, ridiculous ticket prices, and more bandwagon fans than any other sports franchise. Recently, they just haven't won a championship like the Red Sox.
Correction, Champion of the Sun... the Yanks used to have the most bandwagon fans.
The Sox took that title, too.
Trust me on this one, it's the true curse of winning. In the meantime, I'll keep wearing the hat I got when my dad and grandpa took me in 1972 (fourth place, 82-80 record that year).
that whole bandwagon fans thing is such a brush-off - yankees fans are the most dedicated, knowledgeable (and vocal) sports fans. Some people like them for more than the (not-so) recent wins (what bandwagon?? it's been a while) - like the history, tradition, etc.
We lack sufficient information to determine if there's a T-shirt curse. It depends on whose shirt it is.
As the NYY drafted Mike Lowell and then traded him to the Florida Marlins on Feb. 1, 1999, then that could be a problem for Yankee people if it was his.
ChampionOfTheSun: What made the Yankees the "Evil Empire" was all that I pointed out PLUS they were winning championships. Since the Sox have now won 2 titles in 4 years, they are the new evil empire. And as Tim N. points out, there are definitely more people on the New England (Pats, Celts, Sox) bandwagon at this point in time.
If there is going to be a curse on the new stadium it will be because they broke ground on August 16, 2006, or the 58th anniversary of Babe Ruth's death.
The Yankees payroll is $76 million more than the Red Sox this year ($209M vs $133M). That's enough of a difference to field, say, the Atlanta Braves, who also have an above average payroll.
Corey Lidle still sucks, too
The Red Sox should thank their lucky stars that the Yankees exist and are the way they are. It's the only thing that makes them palatable these days.
The whole idea of curses is stupid. The Sox were never cursed -- they just sucked ass for 86 years in a row. There's a difference.
Um, The Red Sox would not have to have such a high payroll if they weren't in the Yankees division.
The Yankees have ruined baseball for many many fans of many many teams.
Baseball needs a salary cap ASAP.
This penalty that they pay for going over the spending limit is bullshit because all the Yankees do is raise ticket prices, concession prices, and cable TV prices.
You prove my point. They're free to outspend every other team in the league and then blame the Yankees, just like you do.
Don't take that to mean that I support what the Yankees do though. I think a hard cap would be great starting next year if possible.
Here's an update:
The Yankees are now saying that the Post made the whole thing up.
Stop the presses.
The real curse is the Hillary Clinton Curse. The Yankees have not won the WS since she was elected.
