Liberty to Play Under Ashe Stadium Lights

2008_04_wnbaashe.jpgFor those looking for WNBA news, today is a huge day. The WNBA draft took place -- one day after the college season ended -- and the league announced the Liberty will play the first outdoor game in the history of professional basketball. New York will play the Indiana Fever at Arthur Ashe Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on July 19. Ashe Stadium, which has been the main stadium court of the U.S. Open since 1997, has never hosted an athletic event other than a tennis match.

The Liberty played at Radio City Music Hall during the 2004 season to accommodate the Republican National Convention. That was a bizarre situation -- the court wasn't surrounded by a fans but was instead in an amphitheater setting. This decision comes on the heels of the popular outdoor hockey game played by the Sabres and Penguins on New Year's Day and a possible Rangers game at Yankee Stadium. Unfortunately, women's basketball doesn't have the appeal that outdoor hockey has. This begs a question: Will Ashe be quieter during this game than it is during a point between Roger Federer and Andy Roddick?

i predict more shrieking kids at us open kids day than at the wnba game.

Amazing idea! Can we get St. Johns or, dare I say it, the Knicks to hit this up in a couple of years? Actually, St. Johns versus the Knicks could be a close game at this point.

very nice idea. I'll be watching the game for sure.

Considering the stadium holds over 22,000 seats, 3k more than MSG, it will make the lack of fans that attend the games seem even more pathetic.

I'm a Liberty fan and season ticket holder and think this is probably one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard. Midsummer nights are meant to be spent indoors, in the air conditioning of MSG, not outside in the mosquito hell that is Ashe Stadium listening to jets approaching LGA. And what about rain? So all these people will buy tickets for the novelty of an outdoor game, but if it rains they'll be sitting in MSG the following day when the makeup game is scheduled.

For some real outdoor b-ball, head to Rucker Park or West 4th... this is crap.

This RAISES a question. "Begging the question" is a type of logical fallacy.

bought tickets to this recently and am really looking forward to it...recently got sucked into the wnba and this will be my first game so it'll be that much more special. If anyone wants more info/ticket info, you can find it here: http://www.wnba.com/liberty/news/outdoor_classic_2008.html
