Lost in the shuffle of the Mets' loss Tuesday to the Phillies in the home opener was the beginning of the team's runoff for official Sing-A-Long song. Last season the Mets used "Sweet Caroline," which is a good song and all...but it's already being used by the Red Sox. Realizing that rubbed some people the wrong way, the Mets included the Neil Diamond classic in this year's online balloting but provided several lame other choices. Thanks to the wonders of the Internet, Rick Astley's 'Never Gonna Give You Up' won. Sensing mischief afoot, the Mets said they would play five other songs and see how the Mets fans react.
Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz told us the Mets, "will determine the winner by the applause and crowd reaction when the songs are played." Judging fan reaction Tuesday -- fans booed heavily when the Astley hit was played -- the Shea faithful won't be hearing "Never Gonna Give you Up" again. Unless they really don't like "Movin' Out." This could also be the last time the Mets allow for write-ins. More than five million people -- some of them Phillies fans, no doubt -- tried to Rickroll the Mets

sweet caroline is most definately NOT a good song and all
take the quiz!!
I love Mr. Met.
A happy and still viable relic from my childhood...
That song was the best of all the other choices, which were horrible.
THE FRIENDS THEME SONG???? Really, they couldn't think of anything better??
Hey, what's wrong with "Never Gonna Give You Up"? That song is hot in a geeky, retro sorta way.
can anyone think of anything better than the friends theme song? "i'll be therrre for you, when your life sucks or something, something, dancing in a fountainnnnn!!!" man, i love friends.
I wonder why the Mets didn't even consider a Ramones song. The band is from Queens, they were most influential in the New York music scene, and they have dozens of fast two-minute songs to choose from. Instead we have dreck from Bon Jovi, Billy Joel and the Rembrandts???
Come on, Fred Wilpon, you can do better than that!
You guys should try rickrolling at birthdays. It's pretty fun. Instead of "Happy birthday to you" you get an earful of Astley.
"Build Me Up, Buttercup"?!?!
I thank God that he made me a Yankees fan.
dr zippy - The Ramones were Yankees fans. There was once a Yankees/Ramones logos mash-up shirt made - maybe about 15 yaers ago - I believe it was licensed and legit and all that. I'm still kicking myself or not buying it, and I'd kill to even see it again.
The Mets already have song for fans to sing along to. It's called "Meet the Mets." And most Mets fans know it.
"I thank God that he made me a Yankees fan."
Because Cotton Eyed Joe and YMCA are wicked songs to hear between innings!
cotton eyed joe needs to be banished from Yankee stadium forever!
I hope that is one tradition that doesn't move to the new ballpark.
I would take rick astley over that silly hill-billy song any day.
aa
"I thank God that he made me a Yankees fan."
God made you a douchebag and in turn, you are naturally drawn to the Yankees.
So, the Mets went and tried to undermine the results of most democratic voting method? Sounds like Hillary's behind this.
CKNY you sound bitter.
must be a Mets fan
How about "I'm a Loser" by the Beatles?
"Everybody clap yo hands!"
clapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclap
This, and this alone will keep me from going to Shea ever again. Well, maybe that and the current state of the bullpen.
I don't understand the YMCA and Cotton Eye Joe thing either and I hope they banish them next year. Ok, the kids dig YMCA, but Cotton Eye Joe is just irritating and has nothing to do with New York at all.
The fans were not booing the Rick Astley song, they were booing the team off the field after that debacle of an inning.
They should use "Tubthumper": "I get knocked down but I get up again..."

Cotton Eye Joe is awesome. It's a terrible techno-billy remix from some no-name europop producers in Sweden. Talk about a truly American folktale!
Bring back the Curly Shuffle! That was huge in the 80's.
Behold the power of Fark...
#23... so was cocaine.
