Paterson: Budget Bloated and Cuts are Necessary

paterson_headshot.jpgGov. Paterson publicly addressed the state of New York's budget and described it as "too big and too bloated." Belt tightening is the prescribed solution according to the Governor, with state spending to be cut by 5-10% in the latest fiscal year. That is a pretty dramatic reduction, but Paterson was quick to reassure that it was equally important that the state not raise taxes either, noting that many residents were decamping to lower-tax states like Pennsylvania and North Carolina, which were also more affordable.

The Governor's belt-tightening plan sounds like it will be a painless one. Per the Sun, "Mr. Paterson said that future budget cuts would not come at the expense of New Yorkers who need services, middle class residents, or the state’s millionaires." Who, exactly, this leaves remaining to bear the brunt of any belt tightening remains unclear.

The Daily News reminds that there's no good budget cut that can't wait until next year, however. The proposed budget in its current form will boost state spending by 4%. Paterson also said that he would be speaking with legislators "eyeball to eyeball" regarding the budget crisis. The current fiscal year's budget is already days overdue.

A good friend of mine decamped to North Carolina a few years ago. He instantly got a job at a bank paying almost twice what he was making here and soon after bought a 4000 square foot house and now drives a Jaguar. Meanwhile the cost of living is around 40 percent less. Tempting indeed, but he can't get sushi at 3AM and probably puts 25,000 miles a year on that Jag. Everything's a trade-off I guess.

we need more than "painless" cuts. NYS needs some really painful ones. The level of taxation in this state are crazy, couple that with NYC's ridiculous additional tax and it is head and shoulders above the other states. Most of my family have left to PA, FL, etc and now I have to reverse commute to NJ because my company moved across the river last year due to taxes and costs. Get the state under control and start getting rid of personnel and services! please!

I am not clever enough to come up with a good "eyeball to eyeball" joke, but please, someone come up with one.

Arggghh! I hate blind people who make fun of themselves. Leave that job to me.

Exactly. It's amazing what people put up with to live in this city... but there's so much here that it almost makes it worth it.

Of course, North Carolina has decent weather all year, you get days off if it snows, and the cost of living is great. Florida has no income tax.

[3] I think Paterson is saying he's going to turn a blind eye to the matter of the legislature's incompetence.

sushi in NC suks. BBQ is a different story, of course.

You know, he really needs to ask his wife to trim his beard for him. Its all over the place.

Paterson didn't see this coming?

In Albany, raising the budget by 4% is considered cutting the budget?

makes you wonder how we survived not so many years ago when the budget was 50% of what it is now... these people in albany are clowns... but the people right here in the city are just as bad.
